Would/do your male dolls wear eyelashes?

Jan 7, 2011

    1. Realism = real as compared to a human male? It counts as a reason to me. I like a certain degree of "realism" and that means my boys having eyelashes. That's all. :daisy

    2. well, to be honest, I don`t like how guy dolls look with lashes...I mean, if humans have it , doean`t mean that dolls have to have it.And I don`t think that thay look like aliens without them either.

Btw, none of my dolls have eyelashes.

    3. I've started using 'lower eye' lashes on my more realistic guys. They look great, and they don't make them seem any more 'girly' than they already are.

    4. I could never see myself getting a doll - male or female - with just painted on eyelashes. Yeah, I know most of us had a Barbie at some point, but seeing the dolls who have actual synthetic lashes, they just look better. Plus, I couldn't imagine myself doing more than necessary. Sure, I'll try and do the lower lashes (poorly), but if I don't have to do the tops, I won't. Attatching lashes might come with their own issues, but I'm willing to take the chance.

You just can't disregard that humans have eyelashes. Sure, these dolls have a lot of features that are physically impossible, but then saying it's not a reason just doesn't make sense. Overall, these dolls are pretty much imitations of people (sure, highly stylized people, but still) - and both have arms, legs, feet...- joints even. So to me, saying that the reason of "Human males have eyelashes" doesn't count, as I said, doesn't make sense.

    5. I have an AoD Chi. Anyone with and AoD knows how long their eyelashes are. When Tovi first arrived, his eyelashes had come off a little in the corner of one side so I took them off. Then I never had the proper glue to put them back on and didn't think it that important so, although I saved them, I left them off for years.

Recently I trimmed them and put them back on and I have to say that I much prefer them on. It's more realistic and doesn't look as feminine when they're cut short. I had to take them off again because I'm going to give him a face up as soon as I can find the right sealer, but once his face up is finished, I'll definitely be putting them back on. It's a subtle difference, but I really do prefer them on. Only uppers, though, and I haven't decided if I'm painting on the lower lashes, but I probably am.

    6. If you really don't like them, they're easy enough to peel off, but if I were you I'd try trimming them first. My AoD Chi came with really long lashes that I didn't like on him much, but after I trimmed them they looked great. They give a subtle degree of realism to the eyes, even with his large eyes and AoD default bright pink face up.

    7. I love eyelashes on dolls, whether male or female. It gives them a hint of realism and it makes their seem a bit more sultry, rather that seemingly wide-eyed.

    8. Well, in real life both males and females have upper and lower eye lashes, so how I see it, both male and female dolls have eyelashes. However, it depends on the individual, if you don't want your male to have upper lashes then don't apply them :).

    9. Good question!
I think it all depends on the doll's personality and what you want it to look like :)
I have male dolls that have lashes, and some without. For some reason, he suited not having any better. It is really up to you, or try both :D you can always take them out if you prefer none

    10. Yeah my guys wear lashes, I don't think it makes them look girly.

    11. Haha.... you know, it makes me wonder who was the first person to "decide" that long lashes and big or emphasized eyes were "girly", and begin to perpetuate that stereotype in modern culture. Because, as pointed out, both genders have equally sized eyes and lashes on average, and both genders find big eyes and long lashes attractive on the opposite gender. History is full of examples of both genders emphasizing their eyes to look attractive. Ancient Egyptian men wore like the modern equivalent of heavy eyeliner and it wasn't considered "girly" in the slightest.

I think "eyelashes are girly" is a dumb modern stereotype that will die eventually. If that sounds weird to you, remember that just a few hundred years ago, it was considered perfectly manly and attractive for a straight man to wear a powdered, curly white wig. The so-called "truths" of gender identity are rarely as universal as we think.

Now as for dolls, take a faceup that looks good and add eyelashes: most often, it becomes a great faceup. Eyelashes really add that extra 3 dimensional kick. This is true of both genders. Even if the lashes are sparse, you still get the added lightplay of the reflection of the lashes in the highlights on the eye, etc. And the fact that we can customize our doll's lashes is yet another thing that is cool and unique about BJDs that I love, and would hate to miss the opportunity to do it simply because my doll was male and some people felt it was "wrong" for him to have lashes.

Of course, in some cases, it's just not the look you're going for, or lashes don't seem to flatter that sculpt. I'd leave them off then. But the look/sculpt I was working with would have the final say, not the doll's gender.

    12. Slightly OT - but kohl was not worn in ancient Egypt as a fashion statement but to protect the eyes from the bright sunshine, which is why it was worn by both sexes.

    13. I like lashes on my boys but only my little fee has them right now. I took my CH Mars's off for a face up and I don't have any to replace them with.

    14. Every human male has eyelashes and all of my male dolls have them.
But I think it depens on the mold. This year I'm going to buy new male doll and he won't wear any eyelashes, even very shot.

    15. My boys both have the default faceup, which came with eyelashes. As soon as I saw the eyelashes on them, though, it grated on me, and I had to remove them. It doesn't help that they were starting to come off one of their eyes, and looked pretty bad... but I thought it blurred the line between male and female too much, and they were just too long. They didn't look right on my boys. So no, my boys don't wear lashes, and they likely won't at any point, no matter what boys I get. I don't like the look.

    16. I have on boy and four girls. Out of my four girls, only one of them has eyelashes. My one boy has eyelashes, but mainly because they came with his default faceup. I don't think they make him look girly at all, but that might be because they're not thick and don't have any curl to them. I really don't think it's just the eyelashes that make the doll look girly. I think you have to consider their dress and faceup as well.

    17. yes mine does :)

i got my doll and he came with a pair of random lashes but they send me clear/white. had to buy some black but they look good on him

    18. Except that it's not off topic. A lot of doll owners, myself included, look at dolls in a very human way. And whilst some dolls have features humans don't, a lot of doll owners try to mask these features. I'm just saying it's not off topic. My dolls are meant to look like humans, not specific people, but humans nonetheless. So it is on topic. That's not to say I don't understand it from your point of view, but you act as if the "human males have lashes" reasoning isn't valid. *shrugs* You might be tired of the reasoning, but it isn't less valid :P

    19. My one doll does not wear eyelashes. I'm not a big fan of most of the available styles and I think they're too fragile and tend to get in the way. Besides, I don't think his face is well-suited to them. I do have one character in mind that they'd suit better, but I think (if he ever ended up in doll form) that I'd just give him long painted lashes and leave the 3D ones off.

    20. My boys are mixed, but I lean toward no lashes for males. I prefer them without lashes for a harder cleaner look. When I do opt to give a boy lashes I use "bottom" lashes [on the upper lid, obviously] as they're short and nicely uniform. It's all about the story and feel I want the final face-up to tell.

My Chiwoo twins have lashes like girls, but they are acceptions in many ways.
