Would/do your male dolls wear eyelashes?

Jan 7, 2011

    1. I would want all my dolls to have eyelashes. I think they look kind of strange without them. I'd probably want the male dolls to have somewhat shorter lashes, although in real life my husband has longer, prettier eyelashes than I do!

    2. I have one boy I got second-hand who came with short ones and they look great for him, but I really can't imagine having them on my other guys. They have more stylized-looking faces/faceups, so I feel like adding lashes would be pushing for unnecessary realism.

    3. Hm, I know you really don't want to hear this, but yes, my male dolls have eyelashes, and it is because real human males have them. Sorry, but this is my main reason, just like my main reason to have urethane eyes from a few specific makers is because those are the eyes I find the most realistic in the iris-pattern department.

I guess giving my semi-realistic dolls as much human-like features as I can is an important goal to me :sweat I don't feel that they look to feminine with lashes, and I actually feel that something is amiss in most cases when I see dolls without eyelashes^^

I actually don't like long lashes even on my girl doll(s), because I find it unnatural (she is not the fake-lashes type). So both my male and female dolls have shortish lashes....I don't like the trimmed look, so I just got shorter ones from Dollmore (so bloody hard to find short ones, really). There are only three exceptions:

JD, my Leeke Luke has long eyelashes. He has the biggest eyes, and somehow I feel that long, girly lashes fit him, and fill up his huge eyes, making them appear a bit smaller proportionally.

Blair, my LTF Lishe doesn't have eyelashes (yet?), because he wears glasses and I don't want to crush the lashes. I'm hesitant about this tough...

Peyton, my MW Minoru came with a default faceup, but no eyelashes. I have been mulling over putting some in him, but I love that default faceups so much, I'm afraid that even a tiny change like that might disturb this adoration. He is my most anime-featured doll anyway :sweat

    4. Yes, but modern woman wear mascara to empathizes their eyelashes, modern males usually don't, so over time we got to thinking that long eyelashes = girly ^^;; Funny how that happens? Historically though, men did wear mascara, you'd be a sad Egyptian male...

    5. honestly, even my girls dont have eyelashes...My Kimi [limited Lydia doll] does because they came as part of the limited faceup from elfdoll but none of my other 4 girls has physical eye lashes and none of my boys do, i think its more of a hassle to keep them from geting crushed and messed up and torn off and whatever..painted eyelashes, i'm good with , all my dolls have those. but real lashes, only one cause i dont feel like touching her limited face up lol..

    6. I don't have a male doll now...but the last one had eyelashes and I like them to have them :3 Maybe not like in a Rimmel commercial xD but I think it makes the doll more real

    7. I think overall dolls no matter what gender looked good with eyelashes! they are dolls so I think should be fine. Also, there is a lot of guys who have long eyelashes looked actually pretty good. However, I think it depends on the doll type. If it is a boy or 17 boy should be ok.

    8. My boy dolls all came to me with eyelashes already and I actually really like them. I thought it would be weird since they're boy dolls, but I like how they add a little more realism to the doll.

    9. yes, my boy dolls will and have eyelashes. real boys/men have eyelashes. :/

    10. Both my dolls have eyelashes (one boy and one girl). When I got my first doll -the boy- one of my favourite things about him was his eyelashes. I was just so amazed that they were so wonderfully detailed. Then with the addition of my girl, who had an even nicer pair of lashes, only increased my love of them. So now, to me at least, I find dolls without them to be the stranger looking ones.

    11. As for eyelashes on boy dolls I like to use them as a symbol of my character's more feminine traits. I have one boy that is rather androgynous, so he wears lashes. Still thinner than what I plan on putting on my future girl, but lashes. ^^
My other boy is much more, well boyish. So he doesnt wear any lashes. ^^
When painting, I paint longer lashes on my prettier boy and shorter on my handsome boy. ^^

I basically use lashes to visually build character in my dolls. ^^

    12. I think it makes the face look better. *shrugs* So yes, my boys have lashes. :)

    13. .

    14. If human males have eyelashes, shouldn't male dolls, as well? That's what I think!

    15. I must say, after reading your initial post, my first reaction was to consider it rather sexist and very old-fashioned thinking. After reading your edit quote, that impression tripled for me.

I do not remotely understand your logic. Why WOULDN'T your male dolls have eyelashes is my question?

As you and many others pointed out, all human beings have lashes equally. Long lashes do not belong to women only in either reality or fantasy. So I am unsure by what reasoning male dolls wouldn't also have lashes. Unless somehow you are equating the idea of long lashes to femininity. If so, I view it as a rather mis-placed, old-fashioned and fairly sexist concept personally. I don't say that to be offensive in any way, mind you. I am just shocked to hear such a view presented in this day and age.

All that said...I also do realize that DoA members are from many cultures and many languages. I may merely be mis-understanding your intent, and if so, I apologize.

But, still, I must say I am dumb-founded as to why anyone would think male dolls WOULDN'T have lashes too.

    16. My male doll has eyelashes! He has a very girly face and the eyelashes make him seem way more girly. -this beeing he point-

    17. It's as you mentioned, old-fashionedness: In this culture we have come to view eyelashes (& hair) as a secondary sex-characteristic, only present in the female. This is of course laughable, because both males & females have hair and eyelashes, and both are capable of growing them long.

But people don't like to bother processing details when they look at an individual, they prefer to see general outlines-- they get an impression based on obvious cultural cues they recognize & accept as comfortable, and anything that deviates from that is set aside as weird, and then the brain moves on. So if lashes are long, this is a visual shorthand for "female". You then don't have to bother differentiating the face, body, hands, posture, etc. Like, you know how if you doodle a smiley face with two dots & a circle? It's assumed to be neuter or male-- but if you add eyelashes to it, presto! now it's female. :chibi

(I myself don't understand the discomfort with long-eyelashed male dolls, but that's where it comes from. It seems like such an amusingly archaic thing... like sanitary belts, or like asking your daughter to quit the rugby team because she'll never catch a good husband that way.)

    18. Indeed. It just really shocked me to see it here of all places. Especially considering that I am so much older than most members of DoA. If anything I would have expected MY views to be more old-fashioned. In my personal thoughts it like asking if your male dolls have fingers as well as your female dolls. Just taken for such a given it never would have crossed my mind.

    19. 3 of my males have eyelashes at the moment. I really love lashes, and I think they make the faceup a bit nicer. I'm planning on getting lashes for all my dolls at some point, just waiting until I have that bit of spare change lying around. :)

    20. One of my dolls came with eyelashes, one didn't (both are guys), and I just left them that way. Eyelashes aren't a big deal to me, so I don't attempt to change them. I like them just the way they are.
