Would Yellowing prevent you from buying your Dream BJD?

Dec 28, 2011

    1. If it was uneven yellowing or really dark yellowing I'd pass on buying my dream doll. I've been waiting for her for a very long time already, so more time really wouldn't matter. If it was slight yellowing (like your dream doll) I'd jump on it!

    2. No, personally, it wouldn't. If I liked the doll, I'd buy it unless it's damaged (though I'm the kind who prefers buying from the company). Yellowing can be undone by a little sanding or a deep wash in the proper alcohol, so why should it prevent me from buying the doll I've been most eager to get? It wouldn't stop me either if the doll came from a factory whose resin is known to yellow fast. I still can turn the yellowing back by simply sanding or soaping in alcohol.

    3. It wouldn't prevent me from getting my dream doll, not at all. Just as I_love_EL said, yellowing can be fixed with a little proper conditioning anyway. Also trust me, you don't love your dolls less just because they've yellowed anyway so your dream doll will still be your dream doll anyway. But that's just my personal view on the matter.

    4. I bought my dream doll as my first doll. When I first got into the hobby I would have probably said that yes it would, because I was really scared of yellowing. Now that I have quite an old doll and have seen yellowing for myself I have to say it's really not such a horrible thing - it's still the doll you love, just aged a bit. :)

    5. Would Yellowing prevent you from buying your Dream BJD?

Yes, it would, particularly if the dream doll was extremely expensive. In most cases, I don't like the look of yellowing at all, and plan to sell all my dolls as soon as their yellowing starts to bother me, since I know there are some people who wouldn't mind. (Actually, judging from the replies to this post, most people are less bothered by yellowing than I am.) Also, I don't think it being a natural process and inevitable makes it any less unsightly - this makes it even more depressing. However, I do have some older dolls who have yellowed beautifully and still look perfect to me, but I've had others (a Delf Yder from around 2006) who looked awful after five years or so, even when kept completely out of light. If I can't get my dream doll within two years of his/her release, it is no longer considered my dream doll and I give up. I want to be able to admire the doll for as long as possible, so buying one with only a few good years left doesn't appeal to me.

    6. If it is a new company and nothing is known about their dolls' yellowing, I take the risk.
If it is a company long known for their dolls' yellowing without improvement, I stay away.
If the company improved over the years, I give it a try.
If the company is known for their protection and there hasn't ever been a doll that yellowed, I'd surely get one.
Other than that I look for the yellowing being even or unnoticable.

    7. Sadly I'd have to say no. When I bought my second doll DOC Zen boy, Kokoro, he was reeeeaaally yellow compared to my other doll who was also bought second hand. I think it just sort of shocked me how much it really bothered me. And, though I know my dolls will yellow over time, I think it helps if I'm the one who sees it and I can do something about it. But getting a brand new (to me) doll that is already super yellow upsets me more than I can handle.

I hope that makes sense. :doh

    8. I bought a doll second hand that was older and more yellowed than expected and at first I was disappointed. But then I worked on him, sanded some of the yellowing away and gave him a new face up, and now I feel much better about him. He's still yellowed, but I've gotten used to the colour.

I'll second the recommendation to ask for comparison pictures. You'll have a better idea about whether the yellowing will bother you or not if you can see in a photo first.

    9. I love white skin dolls. The first one I bought in 2004 was ws. So I don't fear yellow!

If you find an older doll that has been treated well--not damaged, not roughly played with, kept out of direct light, etc., and if the yellowing is slight and even--that's pretty prime. If the doll hasn't changed color drastically over the years--that's a good sign. And the yellowing on a particular doll could also be due to a different resin batch--so it doesn't always help to compare it to newer dolls.

Dolls that change drastically and unevenly--that would be a cause of hesitation for me. I've only had that problem with French Resin dolls, though. Everything else seems to have resin that mellows slowly... But I've been lucky. Even with reputable companies, a resin color can be a problem. Companies have had to partially replace some dolls to keep owners happy with problems like that...

But normal, even yellowing over time--over years--that is something that isn't really that bad.

    10. Just wanted to post an Update!

The seller sent me more pictures and she doesn't look bad. She's in pretty good condition and doesn't come across as yellow in pictures.

At worst, she has a left arm slightly darker than the rest of the body. That's totally something I don't mind and can work with. It could also just be shadow. Her face/head seem to be fine, from what I can see (she still has her original face cover on) and that's what I felt was most important. I'm willing to accept her for how she is and can just look to getting her a different body in the future if I want.

      So I bought her! :)
I'm so excited, I don't think I'm going to believe it until she gets here!
Shipping is going to be delayed a bit because of Japanese New Year but that's ok.

The price was fair, the seller is legit and I didn't have to pay extra for a shopping service, which helped the overall price.

Thank you guys so much for your help! I felt that this was "My Suigintou" since I first saw her and I just needed that extra push to take the plunge! :) I'm just so glad I found an unused/never displayed Suigintou Fullset! I think those are getting harder and harder to find.

Thanks again and Happy New Year!!! :)

    11. OHH!! Congrats!! Volks Suigintou is such a beautiful doll!!

    12. Aweeeesome!! Congrats.

I agree the head is the most important. Especially if you wanted her with the original faceup!!

U have to let us know when she comes in!!!

    13. Congratulations on ordering your grail doll, Violent_Noir!

In all honesty, if the yellowing is even and not glaringly apparent, and the doll is within my price range, I'll certainly consider it. If the doll has yellowed (significantly or not) and I don't have the fiscal means required to purchase it, or I deem it rediculously expensive considering its condition, even if it is my dream doll, I'll pass. I really have no problem with minor or moderate yellowing, just as long as there's no apparent discrepancy in the skin-tone of the doll, considering all dolls yellow to an extent.

    14. It depends on the doll and the original skin tone. If the doll I wanted had to be white than I probably wouldn't buy it used no matter how little the price. Then again, sometimes a little yellowing can be nice. Some white skins yellow to a beautiful cream that you can't get otherwise. On normal skins I don't think a little yellowing would bother me at all though.

    15. I already answered but I Will reanswer: no it would not! I prefer my dolls a bit more yellow than pink. If yellowing is way too bad, there are many tricks to remove yellowing in good part!

    16. Hmm, I do wish I can buy a Iplehouse Aurora and Lahela in normal skin, medium bust and with mobility joint. They are my dream dolls. The only Aurora and Lahela I found are in different skin tones and bust size. But I pray and pray I can find the perfect one that is almost never played with. Yellowing bothers me a bit. Like I don't know my dream dolls right from the start. But unless they are really yellowed or if the yellowing isn't very even, I still will buy them.

    17. To me, unless the doll was supposed to be blue and now it's green or something OR it's really really REALLY uneven yellowing, I wouldn't let it stop me. Yellowing never really is an issue at all unless I'm trying to match it to something else, or its spotty and uneven. Go for that dream doll ;D

    18. For me, it depends on how bad the yellowing is and how badly I may want that particular doll. If it's a model I desperately want then I can tolerate a little more yellowing than I could on a model that I sort of want.

    19. Yellow doesn't bother me one bit, so long as it's not blotchy or crazy yellow in some spots and pure regular color in other spots.
One of my favorite dolls (My Dollzone Wing Elf) is yellow. It's noticeable when I photograph him, I know he is. But the personal connection I feel with him specifically makes me really not care. I love him to death, I don't think I could love him more or less if he was the pretty pale white skinned doll he started out as. But he's been through a couple former owners before living with me. He has a story, and I'm ok with that.
So if it's a doll that you feel like you need to have and would love regardless of yellow or not, then I wouldn't hesitate to buy it.

    20. When you buy an older mold, it's almost innevitable this doll has yellowed. My Sweet Dream Lucas was made in 2003, the original owner has kept him in a box almost the entire time and still he yellowed. It's a natural proces and one that even a plastic bag won't prevent.

To be honest, I think that resin is more beautiful once it has mellowed a bit. Most of the time you can't really call it yellowing: it's not as if these dolls turn into a shade of green or start mimicking a banana. It's just that the skintone becomes softer, even more natural. So no, yellowing wouldn't prevent me from getting my dream doll.
