Would Yellowing prevent you from buying your Dream BJD?

Dec 28, 2011

    1. I wouldn't stop collecting or buying dolls just because of that. Everything changes over time, things start to get old. I like how they age with time, If I could prevent the yellowing, I would but I really don't mind it.

    2. Of course not! I actually own a Volks Suiseiseki (You mentioned Suigintou so I wanted to necro this thread and chime in with my own experience in owning a doll from that general time period from the same company) who has been the same slight creamy-yellow color for the many years I've had her and I actually prefer it to a non-yellowed doll. I think it looks both natural and pretty and was surprised to see Suiseiseki had evenly yellowed despite being in a box away from the sun in a cool environment for so long so I think it's bound to happen anyway no matter how you store the doll. She hasn't seemed to yellow much more in the recent years and has stayed that slight, creamy yellow tone.

Any person with a stigma against a yellowy doll can send that yellowy doll my way, I wish it was an actual skintone option. :)

    3. My "dream doll" was purchased used and was already slightly yellowed and she remains my #1 precious doll. I swear I'll be buried with that doll!
As a note: it is a doll that could and can be purchased new but I bought mine in pieces - head from one seller and body from another and I was lucky that the resin matched!!! I was so new to the hobby that I didn't realize I could've gotten a resin mismatch by buying older pieces separately. But it worked out and she's still my favorite doll and always will be. My entire collection doesn't mean as much to me as she does alone.

Yellowing is inevitable. It's a part of the hobby that must be accepted. In my opinion, if you can't accept yellowing you need a different hobby. It's like going to school to be a mechanic and expecting that you'll never get grease under your fingernails. It doesn't matter how much you dislike it, it's going to happen.

Back to my doll, she's yellowed quite gracefully and remains a very light creamy tone. She'll always be perfect to me.

Now had your question been about greening... I loathe greening dolls! I'd never buy into a doll that could potentially go green. I think it gives a very unappealing presentation.

    4. Oh absolutely, unless it was very very sun damaged, I can handle the yellowing. It's gonna happen anyway! If it meant I could get my dream doll for a good price, sure why not.

    5. It's rather much too late for yellowing to prevent me from chasing BJDs.

If my dream doll was available but yellowed, I'd probably think it would be a fair bargain as long as the price reflected the non-pristine state of the resin. As for my own dolls that may have yellowed over time, so far I'm not liking them any less for what is a totally normal and expected process which, thus far, has been extremely subtle.

    6. Hey!
I am thinking about buying a MiniFee from 2008 that has yellowed. I don't really want to buy a doll and have her look like a lemon when she arrives. Do any of you have yellowed dolls? If so, could you tell me what year they were made and how yellowed they have become? And even if I should get the MiniFee?

    7. My Luts Wintery 2009 is only a year younger than your minifee and hasn't yellowed at all! As a matter of fact he matches my 2012 SSDF body perfectly.
My Immortality of Soul Sezz is from 2007 and he came in the old white skin which is a slightly creamy color. To my surprise although he's clearly yellowed and not quite white at all anymore it's an even more natural shade! He looks pretty fine on my SSDF body as well although he's a hint yellower than the original Luts pinky tones. http://i.imgur.com/n8QcrCP.jpg (sorry for the terrible quality)

All in all, dolls rarely look like "lemons" when yellowed... I hope this helps a little.

    8. I don't own any yellowed dolls myself, but I would probably base my decision on whether the yellowing is even or not. I don't think I would necessarily mind the yellowing, taken that it is not too extreme. However, I'm not the one buying the doll. It all depends on whether you think the yellowing is too drastic for your tastes and if you think the purchase it is worth it. I don't really have any first-hand experience with this, but I heard that yellowing rates can vary quite a bit. Considering that she's from 2008, I don't believe that she would be too bad, but I'm not positive. If you like her, I would say to go for it!

    9. In the same picture Soenatte linked, you can see my minifee boy, whose body is from 2008 I believe. He has yellowed A LOT, but the color is actually very very nice, much nicer than the brand new pink color FL dolls have.

    10. One of my doll is an hybric put together by it's previous owner, orginally, the body was an impldoll in white, and impldoll's white is like, super white. But being 3 years old, it has yellowed, allowing it to match the b&g Saphira head that was more recent. It's more of a light beige colour now than bright yellow.
If the seller of the doll that you are interested in has posted pictures and that the doll doesn't look lemon yellow like you fear, then it shouldn't arrive that way. I don't think any doll has ever turned that yellow, it's always more of a creamy/buttery colour

I don't have many good pictures of him that shows his colour, but this might give you a bit of an idea.

One type of yellowing that might look bad tho is from intense sun damage. Natural yellowing can look good, but if a doll was left in the sun for extended period of time, it can lead to uneven yellowing or turn the resin into a weird shade of yellowing

    11. I have a Volks from 2005 (if I remember correctly) and she has yellowed. It's a lovely colour, though, so I don't mind it at all. I joke that its butter yellow, but its actually a nice mellow warm yellow-beige. Not bad, in my opinion.

Make sure to look closely at photos and see if the yellowing is even. The amount acceptable is all up to you. :)

    12. I don't mind yellowing really, particularly in older dolls where it's expected and inevitable, but I can understand not wanting to buy a severely yellowed doll.

But I have two dolls from 2007/2008, and one of them is actually a Fairyland doll (with a LUTS CP head) and I was pleasently surprised she hadn't yellowed much at all! (I compared her body to her spare hands that had been stored in a plastic bag out of the light for most of the past 5 years.) So, I don't think you have to worry about very much yellowing especially if she's NS.

If you're really concerned, you should ask about the extent of the yellowing and ask for pictures?

    13. Yellowing is a term that's a bit misleading. In almost all cases, 'yellowing' simply means 'mellowing': The colour becomes a bit creamy. In the few cases that a doll turned out like a banana, or turned green, it was a faulty batch that has been rectified.

All of my dolls have yellowed, but most of mine are quite old for BJD standards. The oldest I have is from 2003 and has mellowed to a nice creamy skin tone. It's also worth noting that his yellowing stopped a few years ago. So, it's safe to say that the same can be said for your minifee.
My 'youngest' older doll is from 2007 and he too has stopped yellowing.

2008 isn't really that old and even a new doll will yellow somewhat over time. If the yellowing is even (you can't see any noticable differences in the pictures) and it doesn't bother you when you see the pictures, I'd say buy this doll.

    14. My DZ mo is from 2006/2007 somewhere and he has yellowed quite visibly. Luckily it is even and doesn't show much on pictures. He is far from lemon-yellow, merely white with a tint of cream/butter. A yellowed doll is not necessarily a bad thing, not really. It is bound to happen when the doll starts to get on in years :P

But as other people have mentioned: Look at owner pictures. Decide for yourself whether it is ok or not. How is the price now that it is yellowed? Is it worth it? Is it even? etc.

    15. I agree with Silk that yellowing is really just "mellowing" and the word "yellowing" is quite misleading in most cases. My oldest doll is a Volks from 2005 and she's a creamy color along with my 2007 Volks dolls as well, they seemed to have stopped yellowing after obtaining that creamy tone, and I actually prefer their skintone now.

      * Edit: Now that I think of it, the only older doll that I own which hasn't yellowed at all is a Lati Yellow from late 2006, she's still just as pale as she was initially, and she's Lati's white skintone.

    16. My 2006 beauty white Dollzone has gone a bit yellow but we've been together so long it doesn't matter. If you get a whole doll everything should go evenly. The normal yellow ones look yellow tan. I have pink and white Dollzones that don't look yellow at all. The snowskin Orientdolls from 2007 still look pure white.

I live in semi desert and of all my on topic dolls the only one showing it's age is the Obitsu 60 but he's been out more.

    17. Several of my dolls have yellowed, but I don't mind, usually. They just look creamier. i actually prefer paper white or pink dolls to yellow some. The only time yellowing REALLY bothers me is if it's uneven or a hybrid when one part is much yellower than the other.

    18. I have two dolls that, if I believe the things I read on many a forum thread, to some would seem the stuff of nightmare: they are unevenly yellowed! I bought them off the MP like this. And I don't care a whit. I find that their uneven colour does nothing to deter from their charm and their lovely sculpts. I don't understand why someone can stop loving a doll just because its colour changes. In the case of my dolls, I honestly don't think the colour difference jumps out at you. It's definitely there - some parts are yellowish and others pinkish. But the dolls are still lovely!

To be sure, the second doll I ever saw in real life was a banana yellow French resin Narae. I'm not saying I would specifically go looking for a banana yellow doll; but all I could think when I saw her was, "What a wonderful doll this is! She's so cute!"

I don't know. Maybe I am weird. I have several WS dolls, and the creamier they are, the more I like them. My Supia Rosy is actually too white to my taste. I can't wait for her to mellow a bit.

    19. Thankfully none of my dolls have ever yellowed on me, but I have heard there's a way of "de-yellowing" the resin.
      Not certain though.

    20. Ihave a doll that recently turned a little green. I have had him for over 5 years and he was white until recently. It took over 5 years for him to start to "yellow" though.
