Would you buy dolls modded to look like your favourite Character?

Jan 7, 2007

    1. *cough, cough* yes I came across a Grelle Sutcliff (Black Butler) mod and a Gin Ichimaru ( Bleach) mod, I totally fell in love with the Gin Ichimaru mod.
Although my sister, doesn't like bjd's she did say that she wanted a Benedict Cumberbatch mod!

    2. I have celebrity's that I (and several others I know) use to represent our characters loosely, basically give them a 'real' face. This has been ongoing far before I was into BJDs but if I came across a doll that looked practically identical to said actor? I'd probably buy it but only to re-create one of our OCs, not to have a doll of that celebrity.

    3. I can't see myself getting a doll that looks like an actual person--I think it would make me feel....creepy. Like I'm a stalker or obsessed or something. I don't think there's anything wrong with it, it would just make me feel off having one.

I would, however, like to have a doll or two based off of cartoon or manga/anime characters. I'm currently working on getting together the wig/eyes/etc for my own Shuichi Shindou from Gravitation--though I plan to make him out of a small, off-topic doll rather than a BJD. I do want to make a BJD based off of Billy from SAW though; I know Ringdoll did their "Quiz" doll based off of him, but I want to assemble one that's more movie-accurate, and give him an alternate head so he can function as one of my original characters as well :3

    4. I don't think I'd ever get a doll of my favorite character. I'm not even into celebritiesโ€”but I think Leon S. Kennedy is one? Hah. He's probably my favorite but I still wouldn't get a BJD of him. I prefer for dolls to have their own characters.

    5. It's interesting - I own all the Rozen Maiden Pullips, the Neon Genesis Evangelion Pullips, and plenty of Pinky Street figures based on various characters, but I don't think I'd ever buy BJDs based on existing characters or people.

Maybe it's just because I now own so many that represent my own characters, that I'd feel weird mixing in dolls based on real people or other characters. Maybe it's because I love the customisation aspect of BJDs, and don't feel like I could make a doll based on a person/character feel 'mine' the same way I can my regular dolls. I'm not certain where the hesitation comes from, but it's definitely there.

I do love seeing other people's dolls based on people/characters, though! There's an incredible skill involved in making a doll version of a person/character. It reminds me of caricaturisation - recognising which details are essential to mimic, and which details can be left out to avoid looking cluttered.

    6. I do plan on getting a mod based off a celebrity, but he's just gonna be a doppelganger of the celebrity and that's all there is to it really. I don't see why you can't have a sculpt that resembles a real life person, but you infuse a different character, personality and style into that doll. It's like creating your own version of a celebrity, if he wasn't a celebrity ;)

    7. Nope, it's creepy.

    8. I'm not too into celebs or non-original characters--but, really, it depends on what character and how it was done, right? If it's just an amazing doll of a character I really like, I'd seriously consider it!

    9. Considering that ALL the doll sculpts I buy are chosen based on their ability to pull off various cosplays, then of course. I have OTPs for all my dolls (a group of cosplayers plus friends & family - I've written some stories :D) but I basically went down a list of Bleach & Gintama characters to pick the sculpts LOL I've got 5 (two here & 3 to order) that look like Korean actors/idols - but again that's not their character - I'll be able to do a cosplay of Arang & Faith LOL, & JaeJoong in Dr Jin - AND a 9-tailed fox...

    10. Yes, I would! I have bought OT dolls that are replicas of characters I like, but haven't found a BJD sculpt that I like enough to make into my favorite characters. MNMs aren't really my thing, so that's probably part of it too. But if it looked amazing and was a character I really liked, I would be very interested :)

    11. I've actually modded my very first doll to make him a book character (whew, that was scary!:o I was a beginner and was not even aware that was called "modding" and that you can have someone mod your doll for you, silly me :) ). Well, since it's a book character and not a visual concept, I didn't have to resculpt him or anything that complicated, but still I'm proud of how he turned out!

    12. No no no thank you. I love making my own original characters, which is a huge part of why I love BJDs more than any other type of doll. I couldn't even have a doll that represented an RP character that I co-created with a friend. Plus, I dislike celebrities and have never been interested in them.

    13. I'm surprised I haven't replied here yet, considering I've finally taken blade to resin for the extensive character-mod project I've been planning for nearly five years! When I first joined the hobby, I had absolutely no interest at all in a "character doll" for myself. I never minded them; my roommate at the time had an extensive set of character dolls, herself, and I enjoyed looking at them, but for me, I was much more interested in original characters... until someone ran a MNM order for my favorite fictional character, and I joined up.

He sat around as a floating head until last year, though; I finally got him a body a year ago, and this year got over my anxiety about cutting into him. On top of that, I began putting together a whole family of "character dolls" around him, some with just faceups and wigs to make them look like their characters, and in one character's case, additional physical mods on top of the extensive ones I'm working on now. Not only that, I have a lot of these characters in two sizes and am even considering a third!

A (very rare) body does exist that has the same features I'm modding into this boy right now, but the body type isn't quite what I like... there's also parts I can buy that are similar but, again, not quite right. If a body existed that fit exactly what I wanted, though, I might just buy that modded body; as it stands, I'm really enjoying the process, and glad I changed my mind on character dolls in my collection!

    14. Based off of celebrities? Nah, they don't interest me enough to have a doll made of them.

I would get dolls based off my favorite anime/manga characters. It doesn't really matter if they are either pre-made or ones I have to customize myself. I don't have many OCs either...

    15. I don't have any celebrity dolls but i do have 2 character dolls that were made to be Lady Amalthea from the book and animated movie "The Last Unicorn" I had planned on only buying one but then a few years after I bought the first one I saw another one that was also amazing and I ended up having to buy it.

    16. I guess I'm somewhat in the middle on this. I have an actor who creates characters I adore. I don't see me setting up a doll to be "just" the actor, but have acquired a couple of minimees to convert to my favorite characters of his. It just seems logical to me to reduce the amount of work to get to the character by starting with a doll that looks like the actor (and a couple of his characters have specialty tattoos, so I need different bodies for each, so more heads means less possibility of my clumsy self getting hurt swapping heads between characters.)

i have one other that, honestly, I don't have so much interest in the actor, but there's a minimee of one character he did that I absolutely adore. Problem is, that head seems to be non-existent on the marketplace, so I have a backup sculpt in mind that I think should make a fairly reasonable facsimile when I give up trolling for the MNM head.

    17. Yes I have a character doll based on a celebrity and that's my Tom Hiddleston MNM who is my Loki. He actually has two heads one Asgard and one Jotun. He and my Thor are the only two dolls I own who are not my original characters. Their characters are part marvel, part mythology and part my imagination.

    18. Yes, of course I would! It sounds like a great idea!

    19. I'd love to have a Ciel Phantomhive (specially for the demonic eye) or Levi (from SNK) doll, but I agree with you on the real people/celeb dolls... I think I once saw a very realistic doll of Benedict Cumberbatch as Sherlock and I could help thinking it looked like a miniature mummy, even if the sculpt was exquisite and the owner put a lot of effort in their doll. So nop, no lookalike doll for me !

    20. Well, I am somewhat doing this. I really do love most of the Avengers, and some I will try to get some of them as close to the movie originals as possible. But there are some changes to the team. I consider that artistic liberty, because if I do not really fully appreciate them, all the work will be for nothing, and I know that I won't finish them. I will change Captain America's costume slightly, Black Widow will have a widely different costume design (and beautiful long, red hair, as I can't bring myself to cut the wonderful Monique wig she is wearing), and there won't be a Hulk at all, but a wise, old dragon (I am adoring Loongsoul's Ying Long, but I have to dollify the dragon with another sculpt).
