Would you buy dolls modded to look like your favourite Character?

Jan 7, 2007

    1. I do like the idea of character faces, there are many I'd like to see. Adam Lambert is one!

    2. I was thinking about it at one point, but if I went for it I'd rather work on creating them myself than to buy them pre-made. At least in that sense you could choose the model doll you want, and get separate faceplates and wigs so you could always switch them back to their original character whenever you'd like. It's like having several different dolls in one :B

    3. I saw a brand once that made a doll after The Little Prince, it was sooooo cute! The full sets even came with the outfits he wore in the book. I think if I ever bought a doll that looked like a character, that one would be it ^_^

EDIT: this is the link to it: http://www.bjdcollectasy.com/mudoll/le-petit-prince-doll-ending.html So cute!

    4. I am planning to do a Witch Hunter Robin doll at SD, although I have also been looking at the 80cm dolls, so yes, if someone did a really good Witch Hunter Robin doll in 80cm scale and I could afford it, I would buy it.

Personally, I'd rather do it myself though. It's half the fun of the hobby, after all...

      Phil.

    5. It depends, probably it depends on like how much and if i really want too?

    6. I'd definately consider it, if someone released a good Castlevania Alucard xD
But like most people, I'd prefer to do it myself. Half the fun is the searching for the perfect face and eyes, even if your preference doesn't really agree with other fans xD

    7. I wouldn't. I'd prefer having a doll modded to look like something or someone I want to create ^^

    8. I've had an idle daydream of getting a Zack Fair doll for years now - at the start of 2008 I ordered a couple of minimee heads of him from D.I.M. but I never really felt that they worked out quite the way I wanted and so ended up not doing anything with them... just last month, however, I saw a Black Cat Lucas going for relatively cheap in the marketplace and snapped him up, and he's currently off in China getting a Zack faceup done on him before he comes home again. I'd like to say that this is going to be a happy ending to quite a long saga here... fingers crossed!

    9. I dont watch much anime anymore but I always loved Pokemon as a child. So without sounding too geeky I'd love to get an Ash Ketchum (Satoshi) doll at some point! Then a little tiny to be pikachu! I dont think i'd go down the minimee route. but rather mod/etc a company doll.

As much as I have a fan crush on many celebs I dont think I could ever get one in doll form.

    10. I don't think I'd buy a doll modded to look like someone in particular. One of the things that drew me to BJDs is the sense of individuality that comes with each doll-- the fact that you can customize them so much that no one else has a doll with the exact same face, even if they were originally the same model. I think making them look like someone else kind of detracts from that sense of individuality.

Now cosplay on the other hand, I absolutely adore. I'll dress a doll up in my favorite characters' outfits, but it's still the doll playing dress-up and not the character itself.

But hey, that's just my opinion

    11. I think it would be nice to own a character doll, but I think I like it much better to have my dolls be able to cosplay numerous characters. They can be someone else whenever I choose. Right now, Shinta is still sitting in his Inuyasha cosplay after attending a convention yesterday.

    12. I'd have to say yes, as that it currently what I am specifically looking for *and I think I've found:)* Of course, during my search, I've found several others that have definitely spoken to me!

    13. Ohyes!

It think it all boils down to.. fandom obsessions, and nostalgia! As celebs, definitely not appealing to me either, it'd feel a bit weird as well to me, to obsess so much over an actual person (the actors themselves are usually a bit boring compared to portrayed scifi chars for instance, in my opinion ;). Fictional characters are usually more safe obsessing ground too, for so many reasons. Yet, this need not only be limited to videogame/anime characters of course..

Characters I'd love to have as modded BJDs (be it by own design or commissioned):

      - Pippi Longstocking, spunky strong girl (based on Swedish books about Pippi Långstrump, by author Astrid Lindgren)

That character represents so much of my happy childhood memories, so to have an own Pippi, it'd be so much fun.

      - Todd, the Wraith (or perhaps other male or female wraith from Stargate Atlantis)

Whereas Mr Wraith here, applies more to my ahem grown up fancies, my way of keeping a more modern fandom idol figurine to ogle. Chances are I'd "play" more with a Pippi doll than a Todd doll though. One'd be a play doll and one'd be a cabinet doll basically.

Finding the proper/suitable base BJDs is quite vital though, although some modders may be able to work wonders with almost anything. Previous posters spoke of hesitancy of forcing a different "soul" into a BJD, and I can see what they mean, but sometimes the likeness of some people/characters can be uncanny. Or one just spots a BJD that head and/or body wise reminds one a lot of a certain character for some reason, and one can use that as a starting point.

Lastly, it's been very fun seeing/reading about custom mod projects here on DoA inspired by the Avatar movie, for instance! Very inspirational, so maybe there is hope for me to do some custom modding in the future, as I'd surely rather see individual persons doing BJD modifications/commissions, rather than some big company selling x Pippis etc even if it was some limited edition run.

    14. If I could find dolls that looked enough like them are were to my aesthetic liking, you bet your butt I would want the OBC of Rent as dolls.

    15. Aw, I think a Pippi Longstocking doll would be adorable! When I do wind up getting a girl (erm, after Vince, Su-san, and Tino if not after even more boys than that... :sweat) I'm sure she'd dress up as Pippi for a photo or two... (when I was a kid, every time my mom braided my hair, people called me 'Pippi'...)

Mmm, Todd the Wraith... I like the way you think! *grin*

I thought at one point about doing the Atlantis team as dolls, but I might just get wigs and make cosplay outfits for other dolls... my wishlist at the moment is way ahead of my means! But a Todd sounds really cool.

      =^__^=

    16. No celebrities for me just two male characters ones already planned
Drizzt and Gambit I never was into the boy bands or heart throbs growing up but these two I have always had a thing for. While my peers were swooning over new kids on the block I was in a corner reading marvel comics

    17. Yes! There's a few character I've loved for years and it would be awesome to have a BJD of them!
I have a few 1/6 of my favorite video game/anime characters!
It also brings attention of dollfie to the fandom who find them cool!

    18. Not for sure. I love to look at photos of dolls modded after some of my favourite character but I would never buy doll like that nor I would make my doll look like some character. I want my dolls to have their own original character, their own personality and look like I imagine, not someone's else :) That wouldn't be much fun anymore at least for me :)

    19. I'm not very fond of celebrities, so I don't think I'll spend my money in a modded doll just because it resembles somebody. I'd rather have original characters in my collection, I'm afraid if I had a doll like celeb at home, I'll get tired of it.

    20. Yes! There's a few character that would be awesome to have a BJD that looks like Halibel from Bleach :)
