1. It has come to the attention of forum staff that Dollshe Craft has ceased communications with dealers and customers, has failed to provide promised refunds for the excessive waits, and now has wait times surpassing 5 years in some cases. Forum staff are also concerned as there are claims being put forth that Dollshe plans to close down their doll making company. Due to the instability of the company, the lack of communication, the lack of promised refunds, and the wait times now surpassing 5 years, we strongly urge members to research the current state of this company very carefully and thoroughly before deciding to place an order. For more information please see the Dollshe waiting room. Do not assume this cannot happen to you or that your order will be different.

Would you ever buy an outfit for your bjd that costs more than the doll itself?

Oct 24, 2010

    1. I think I would rather use the money to buy another doll :P

    2. I wouldn't do it because I would be terrified that if I get it...it wouldn't fit. Or I would have a heart attack if ONE stain got on it. .or worse. . .it stains the doll.

    3. I wouldn't.. I'd probably just use the money to buy another doll, Or more than one outfit.

    4. Yeah I'm with DarkPanther...if I had enough money to buy a super expensive outfit, I'd just buy another doll. I mean if someone was selling a BJD suit of armor...maybe. Otherwise nope, not gonna happen. I prefer my girls in jeans and such anyway.

    5. May be...but only if it's an amazing outfit and it's for my favorite BJD.

    6. Absolute amount I could EVER EVER pay for something I thought was amazing? $50.

I have piles of material that needs to become things. All kinds of cut out pieces that I have yet to sew together. And I'm cheap as hell. $50 might not seem like that much, some doll BOOTS cost that much, but it still makes me go "OMIGOSH OMIGOSH OMIGOSH X___X".

That's not saying that there aren't outfits priced at hundreds that are absolutely worth it. Amazingly intricate stuff done on tiny scales...worth every penny they get and I hope that the new owner treasures them. They just won't ever have to bid against ME XD

    7. I have a hard time justifying spending more on clothes for a doll than I would on clothes for myself. But over the past few years my wardrobe has increased in price, therefore I'm more likely to spend more on clothes for my dolls. If my favorite designer ever got around to making clothes for dolls like he was talking about back in 2009, I would be all over it in a heartbeat. Though I can bet my britches they'd be about as expensive as buying a new SD.

    8. I would just buy a new doll, or get new stuff for my doll(s), plus, I have to go through my parents before purchasing stuff, so no way in a million white hot suns would they let me get anything that expensive.

    9. I can only say that honestly... it depends on the outfit.

Later this year, I'm going to be buying a pair of Iplehouse EIDs to be resin avatars for my favorite City of Heroes MMO character and her NPC partner. While Grey Kestrel's in-game costume was relatively simple and will be fairly easy to reproduce, Red Cardinal is another matter entirely. He was a Mu Adept, and his outfit is going to require the skill and services of someone who can make decent 1/3-scale armored pieces.

I fully expect to pay more than the price of the doll to put Cardinal's costume together, and don't really have any reservations about that at all. Kestrel and Cardinal are important to me... Enough to go to the expense of having things done right, particularly now that the City of Heroes game itself no longer exists. The resin versions of these two are almost all I'll have left of them.

(If you're curious what Adept armor looks like, Cardinal is the rather smug-looking guy on the left. In-game, that outfit of his was bright red. Kestrel is the girl with the wings and the swords. She's also my avatar pic. ^_^)

    10. Yes, but that would mostly be for the VolksxBaby collaboration outfits. Especially if they are still a full set with complete accessories (like purses and shoes).

    11. I would rather buy another doll with that money than buy an outfit!
If an outfit is too expensive than it's not worth me purchasing. I can find something else I'd probably like just as much for cheaper~

    12. Yes, absolutely. If the outfit is something I like I'll get it anyway as long as I can justify the purchase.

    13. Considering I collect SD's...I would say no for a single outfit. I'm a bit of a bargain hunter (I shop mainly in places like Ross or Loehmans and sales for myself), if I think I can make it I won't buy it. Plus I'm a new collector so not familiar with some of the high-end designers. I also really like separates so I can create their own unique style. So far the most expensive outfit I've seen and slightly considered was around $300.00 but that's less than I paid for my guys. Now if we were to talk about total wardrobe (excluding wig, eyes, face-up) per doll...that's a different story...

    14. I think I would much prefer to make my dolls' clothes to buying them anyway, so I don't foresee myself buying an outfit that costs more than a doll. I'd be much more inclined to look at an expensive outfit, and think "this would be perfect for a character except <this> doesn't look quite right" and then settle down and figure out how to make my own version that looks perfectly suited for the character rather than not quite right than ignore the not quite rightness and buy it anyway.

Maybe if I ever found an outfit that truly looked perfect for a character I would consider buying it, but so far, I haven't seen anything that would fit a character perfectly and not make me want to change things.

    15. I don't think so.
I get so much enjoyment from sewing for my dolls that I couldn't justify that sort of cost. There's just something about dressing your doll in clothes you made that's special, you don't get that with purchased things...shoes on the other hand I can't make, so I do buy them, but I try not to pay more than $50 for them.

    16. I would say no. I am waiting for a RS Ming, he was $170. I found a perfect outfit for him and it cost $120. I balked! So, that shows you what I am willing to pay. I will try to fashion it myself. Then again, II sew all my own costuming for renfaire myself, so... LOl!

    17. To be honest... I don't like paying for parts of an outfit that cost more than things I wear now (and I'm not terribly frugal...!).. Especially since I let my characters flesh themselves out rather than becoming so set (and in debt) for trying to perfect an idea I have. So no, I don't think I would, unless the doll itself was dirt cheap ( <$100)

    18. Yes, but only when it comes to YOSD's, smaller, or some VERY special larger doll, maybe.

    19. Only when I got to the point where I didn't want to buy anymore dolls. Then any doll funds would go into their clothes, wigs, eyes etc instead.

    20. I would never do that, I prefer to get more dolls even though they have to live with one outfit, plus if I can I make clothes myself ^^
The maximum that I've spent for an outfit was 40$ but I think that if I'll ever get a MSD I would spend a little more but not for a single piece..
