Would you ever buy an outfit for your bjd that costs more than the doll itself?

Oct 24, 2010

    1. I haven't done it yet, though I've certainly spent in the $200 range on a single outfit before. My cheapest doll is a Volks MSD (so around $300). I wouldn't refuse to do it on principle or anything, but I have yet to see an outfit I'd spend SD prices on. Yet. I am starting to realize that I'd rather have a few more expensive and nice outfits that a bunch of cheaper items, though. I have seen OOAK kimono and dresses at BJD events that were getting very, very expensive; in many cases, the fabrics and lace and detail on them made them worth the money. If I had a girl who wore that kind of thing, I would likely have spent the money to get one.

    2. I would have to draw the line at about $200-ish, and the only time I can think of even spending that much on an outfit is if it's a BTSSB outfit or an H. Naoto one. Other than that, there's nothing really worth that much in my eyes. I won't even spend that much on my clothes, much less a dolly.

    3. I guess I'm cheap and probably a terrible dollie collector, because I'll totally spring up to $800 for a doll, but I'd rather leave it nekkid than purchase an outfit that cost me more than $40. $40 is the maximum, because the uniforms for my dolls from Dollmore cost about that much and since I refuse to make uniforms, that's something I have to buy. I make all the other outfits myself. I like sewing, and I figure since I've already spent so much on the doll, I can at lease save some money on the clothes/accessories.

    4. no never, I'm too cheap and I can sew, so I will make something like it myself.

    5. Quite likely not, but only because I'm a poor college student with other economic priorities. If price was no object, I've seen a few AWESOME outfits out there that I would be willing to consider. (It's very likely sold out by now, but I saw a little dress on eBay made of preserved lilacs--which just so happen to be my favorite flower. Most recent bid had gone for $1000.)

    6. I'm not denying the quality, lavishness, or time and materials invested in some outifts...I think they are many with more attention to detail and fine sewing than the clothing I own for myself..that said, I've never spent more on an outfit than I've paid for any of my dolls, and I don't think I'd ever be able to justify it. In most cases if I had that much money to devote to the hobby I'd get another doll...:sweat

    7. Unless someone can make me a fully functioning (to a point) hardsuit for Yumeko, I seriously doubt it. (To the unfamiliar, she's the main character in my Bubblegum Crisis fanfics. The "hardsuit" is her armor.)

    8. uuuuuuhhhhh probably not.
I would try to make it first if I really wanted it but then I could probably talk myself out of it to not need it.
I would just get another doll with that money 8T
But some people feel like they absolutely need the outfit for the doll so that's cool too

    9. For a BIG BJD it wouldn't make sense, maybe if it were a lot of pieces I put together over a long period of time to complete my doll, but for example, a BBB Elfkin is only 98 canadian dollars, so... realistically if I wanted a really designed outfit for him i could possible spend that much, though I don't know how likely unless it included like horns or hooves, ears ect... not just articles of clothing.

    10. We-ell...my cheapest doll is about 275USD give or take, but the most I've ever spent on an article of clothing would be a Dollheart set that was around 89USD (which I sold in the end anyway because I sold the doll that wore it, derp.) My crew simply just doesn't wear clothes that command price tags of over 100USD, so I don't see myself ever spending that amount.

If we're talking about seperates, then it MIGHT be possible that I've spent more on clothes than I have on dolls; but even then I don't think it's going to exceed even my most expensive doll. (Who is around 980USD, give or take some.)

It's totally possible to get amazing, well-made outfits for even 50USD.

    11. I'm not against the idea in theory, as I believe that excellent craftsmanship deserves to be rewarded with the appropriate compensation when you're buying something like a luxury art or craft item. In reality, I am of course limited by the money I have and my own budget and some outfits that I would love to own that go for serious money and that I feel are worth their price I simply cannot afford to purchase.

I don't think I've ever spent more on an outfit than I have any of my dolls....No wait, you can buy a brand new Bluefairy MSD for $278 and the highest I've ever gone for an outfit was around $350, though that outfit wasn't for him. So I guess technically I have spent more for an outfit than I have for at least one of my dolls.

Now, if we were talking about doll eyes....my dream is to someday own a pair of Antique Rose eyes. This is probably going to require about the price of a higher end MSD to make happen.

    12. Some of my dolls I got for pretty cheap, so yes, I would spend more than that on an outfit if it was exactly perfect. At this point I'm not eager to spend more than $125 or so on an outfit, but if it was perfect I might do so.

However, I absolutely WOULD spend more on a piece of doll clothing than on something similar for myself. I can go any day of the week and easily find a decent, well-fitting pair of jeans for myself for around $20 and a plain fitted T-shirt for less than $10. Good, well-fitting, realistic looking doll jeans? Probably more than that, maybe much more, and not so easy to find. But a doll can have one pair of jeans and that's fine - they're not going to gain or lose weight or wear them out or stain them; and they can wear the same pair forever and no one will ever care. Doll clothes and people clothes are not at all comparable to me!

    13. It depends on the doll, and it depends on the outfit. I haven't yet seen an outfit that would make me drop a ton of cash. But I've commissioned an outfit for one of my MNFs in the $200 range. It was a custom outfit, just for the character. It was beautiful, well made and the doll has been wearing it non-stop since it arrived. Totally worth the money.

If 1) the quality is high enough, 2) you know you're going to use the outfit a bunch and 3) it's something hard to find or you can't make it, then why not?

    14. I do the same thing. Considering the cost of fabric and pattern books, it definitely hasn't saved me any money to make doll clothes.

Apart from that... I don't think any of my BJDs have one outfit that cost more than the doll. My most expensive outfits are for my larger dolls, which happen to cost more. I prefer to sew small, so for smaller dolls I always think I will make their clothes, but then I don't get around to it.

    15. I would have to say no, but that would just be because I can't really afford it. -__-;;;

If I was wealthier perhaps? Because of my small budget I draw the line around $50, which can really hinder some of the themes I'm going for. I plan to sew all or most of my doll clothes myself, so I'm not that heartbroken about it. The accessory that would most likely be bought would be shoes seeing as how I couldn't make anything that would compare to the quality of some of them out there.

    16. I ALMOST spent the cost of a higher-end SD doll on a dress once, almost. There was this absolutely gorgeous black velvet Victorian gown on Yahoo!Japan and with like 10 minutes to go the price had gone up to $150 or thereabouts. My strategy is to always bid at the last possible minute (give or take a few minutes because I have to go through a bidding service first), so I bid. And got outbid. Then I decided on my usual strategy, last-minute, crazy high bid and hope the other person isn't crazy or fast enough to outbid you in the last seconds. they were, and with a few minutes to go the price had reached over $600. I was about to bid when it hit me that I could buy a whole SD with that money and more importantly, if I had to pay that much and my girl would wear the dress, I would never dare to touch her or put her down or anything, let alone take her outside for pictures, for fear of damaging that gorgeous dress. I realized spending so much on a dress would take all the enjoyment out of owning the outfit, and I'm not prepared to let that happen. So my spending limit WAS around that of a Dollheart outfit ($120). But now i'm unemployed and I hardly spend anything on clothes at all anymore^^;;.

    17. Like many others, it depends on which doll and how much it cost. I have dolls that I paid over $1700 for. There's no way I'd spend that much on an outfit! But I also have dolls that only cost me around $200-300, and I'd certainly be willing to spend that much on an outfit if it perfectly suited what I wanted and I felt the quality of the materials and workmanship warranted it.

    18. BJD prices vary, so it depends on what you're talking about. $500 - $1000 for an outfit? No, that would be too high for me. It's not that there aren't seamstresses who do stunning work, it's just that my focus is not so much on the clothes. Don't get me wrong, clothing is important as it helps define their characters, and I like having realistic detailed things, but for my purposes I don't need to spend that much. I think I might be worried about possible wear and tear and might not enjoy it as much anyway (I have that problem with expensive real people clothes -- I'm always afraid I'm going to get something on them). However, I would be willing to spend $100-$200 for an outfit, which is getting into the range that some of my less expensive dolls cost.

    19. My limit for an outfit is 150usd. I can justify spending much more on a doll, but anytime I see an outfit over 150 I just think, "I could but that in human size for about the same price!"

So no, I wouldn't spend as much on an outfit as I did on my doll.

    20. At the beginning I gave a lot of Clothes in Commisson, but for a single outfit i would never pay 500+..
Actually i sew the Clothes myself when i hace special whishes, so i have what i really want and can fit them the doll perfectly and don't have to wait forever :)
