Would you ever buy an outfit for your bjd that costs more than the doll itself?

Oct 24, 2010

    1. Is it 'right' to spend as much on an outfit as on a BJD?
I don't think there's a "right and wrong" here, at all.

Would you be (or have you been) willing to spend as much on an outfit for your BJD as for the BJD itself? Why or why not?
Nope. I personally wouldn't. There are so many gorgeous dolls out there that I'd much rather buy another one than spend the equivalent on a single outfit. Besides, there are so many cute outfits out there within my budget.:)

If your answer is no, where do you draw the line?
Hmm... I'm not exactly sure. The most I've spent on an outfit so far was around $60. But I'm sure I'd be willing to spend more than that if I saw an outfit I really liked. I guess... For each piece of clothing (e.g. pants, 1 shirt) for "everyday" use a maximum of $30. For specific character ideas or other 'fancy' things perhaps around $170 for an entire set?

    2. I would be willing to pay premium for nice outfits. My most expensive outfit was a bit over 200 dollars, but I find the clothes just as much of an art as the dolls are and really appreciate the detail that goes into them. A lot of the clothes I like happen to be pretty intricate and elegant with lots of little pieces, so it can be tough to find them for under a 100. ^^; Even if I don't use all of the pieces, I still enjoy having them as an option to mix and match with other outfits. You never know what might come in use later! (o:

I can't really draw a line on how much I would spend on an outfit though. It honestly depends on how it looks, the style and it's quality. If it's an outfit that I am to die for and I know nothing else can compete with it for one of my doll's characters, I would happily spend over the price of the original doll. ^^ I haven't actually ran into any outfits that cost that much in my size range yet. All of my dolls are pretty much YoSd sized with the cheapest being $400.

    3. I have bought a suit for over $100, but my cheapest doll was $80. But I can't spend like $500 on an outfit for a doll that cost that much. I rather have a doll.

I do appreciate the detail of the outfits though. I just can't justify it.

    4. I can't say I never would but I highly doubt I'd buy an outfit that costs more than the doll. I just prefer buying BJDs over clothes any day. I don't think there's anything wrong with buying expensive doll clothes though, it's just personal preference.

    5. I think it's really weird to phrase a question like this in terms of morality. I don't think you can truly judge another person for how they use their money unless they're hiring like, hitmen or something, haha. I would personally never spend that much on an outfit unless it was absolutely stunning. I tend to have a soft limit of about 20 dollars per clothing item just because I like sewing more complicated pieces of clothing, but I might go up to 100 dollars on something really amazing. I agree with the sentiment that I'd rather buy another doll than another outfit, especially when I can make outfits with a bit of effort on my part.

    6. It depends. I don't think I'd pay more than $200 in an outfit because clothing is not the focus for me. It's not about being right or wrong, but how you face the hobby, and it's a personal issue.

    7. Never! Mostly because the oufits I want have to be handmade (so special characters) and because i think is a madness to spend more money on your doll's clothes than in yourself clothes >.<

    8. I absolutely couldn't imagine doing it. Nope. I was weary about spending as much on just the doll itself! But then to see tiny boots for over $40.00 knowing full well that I could be spending $40 on some boots that I could be wearing XD but then I say 'these will wear out, I'll grow out of them, I'm gonna have the doll boots forever' And it kinda fixes it. BUT to spend that much on an outfit..I guess it depends on how badly I want it! I wouldn't dream of it now, no, but I may certainly be tempted! Some of those outfits are beyond gorgeous, well crafted and just look amazing!

    9. I wouldn't spend more on an outfit then the original cost of the doll. But then my crew wears casual clothes.

    10. This really depends on the quality of the outfit and the price. I spent close to $3k on a doll before but I wouldn't be willing to spend that amount on an outfit simply because it's just an outfit no matter who designed it or what its made of. I spent close to $300 on a single outfit before but kinda regretted it afterwards... So I think that's the farthest I would go...

    11. Is it 'right' to spend as much on an outfit as on a BJD?
I don't see how 'right' or 'wrong' comes into play. It's up to the person whether the outfit is worth it and it's none of our business.

Would you be (or have you been) willing to spend as much on an outfit for your BJD as for the BJD itself? Why or why not?
Nope! No matter how much I like the outfit, that kind of a price-tag would just seem ridiculous. I'd rather spend my money elsewhere!

If your answer is no, where do you draw the line?
Around $100-150 is about the most I'm willing to spend on a spectacular outfit.

    12. I don't think so, lol. The most i'd ever pay is $100 for a outfit. And that would be their special outfit, which would be the most expensive and least worn...maybe it would be their display outfit, ikd. But never anything that cost more then the actual doll.

      -slowly raises hand-

If I'm going to spend 200$ or more on a doll, I'm going to spend another 100$ on their clothes. At least. I'm a snob when it comes to doll clothing.

    14. Is it 'right' to spend as much on an outfit as on a BJD?
If someone would want to spend that amount on an outfit, please do so.

Would you be (or have you been) willing to spend as much on an outfit for your BJD as for the BJD itself? Why or why not?
      Never.
I have seen wonderful outfits, but I have a limit. I am not even spending those amounts on clothes for myself, let alone on doll clothes.

If your answer is no, where do you draw the line?
My limit is actually pretty low, about $20-30. I am willing to stretch the limit if it would be the most amazing thing ever.
In the past I have purchased two more expensive sets. The most expensive one being $70-something. And in the end my dolls hardly ever wear it.

    15. Is it 'right' to spend as much on an outfit as on a BJD? I would say no, but then again, I wouldn't spend more than a hundred on most of my own clothing.

Would you be (or have you been) willing to spend as much on an outfit for your BJD as for the BJD itself? Why or why not? I had to put my doll on layaway to get her- I'm poor and cheap! There is no way I'd spend over $100 for clothes!

If your answer is no, where do you draw the line? I have been drooling over some kimono I saw on MoC...I would buy them if I had the cash, that being $70, so I guess that's where I draw the line.

    16. i dont think so lol, if thats the case i rather find a much cheaper version of the outfit, or will try to sew it

    17. I've yet to do that & would prefer not too ^^;; especially as I can sew a lil bit & have a seamstress very close by me. Granted I do get lazy at times, but I think the most I ever spent on an outfit is $120 for a Volks Omukae set. Course I agree with the others on what you are willing to do for your doll & how much you can handle with the budget, plus other factors.

    18. I usually buy handcrafted clothing frommy friend or on Ebay, so they use to be pretty cheap D:

    19. I already think spending £20 on an MSD shirt is ridiculous when my shirts cost around £5! (Not dissing anyone who spends a lot of money, I just find it amusing)

My entire outfit for my BJD cost me just over £20 and I'd probably keep a £50 limit for clothing. My doll is £150, so not that expensive! And all the expensive outfits are too fancy for her character :P

    20. Is it 'right' to spend as much on an outfit as on a BJD?
Is it right or wrong to spend that much on human clothes? It all depends. If you've got the cash and your heart is set on that one outfit then yes, it's right. (I still can't see me doing it, however.)

Would you be (or have you been) willing to spend as much on an outfit for your BJD as for the BJD itself? Why or why not?
At the moment I couldn't imagine ever doing that. It's hard enough to save up for dolls, I've got quite a few left on my wishlist, so before they're home there's no way I'd ever spend that kind of money on an outfit.

If your answer is no, where do you draw the line?
Anything that costs more than I'd be willing to spend on clothes for myself is too expensive. e.g. if I can get a plain long-sleeved shirt for myself for like $5, I won't spend three times the amount on a similar shirt for my doll. I'd flinch if I had to shell out $30 for a pair of denims, so no way am I buying them for my doll for the same price. (Of course I see why doll clothes are as expensive as they are, the work involved is insane. But I like that kind of insanity, so I'm one of the lucky ones who just sew their dolls' basics.)
