Would you ever buy an outfit for your bjd that costs more than the doll itself?

Oct 24, 2010

    1. Oh no...No no no no.

    2. Is it 'right' to spend as much on an outfit as on a BJD?
For me the idea of spending that much on an outfit doesn't quite sit well with me. Unless it is a super limited granado espada kinda costume or something and I really love the costume, I might prolly consider. But the chances of getting it are really low.

Would you be (or have you been) willing to spend as much on an outfit for your BJD as for the BJD itself? Why or why not?
I don't think I'll ever spend that much on an BJD outfit due to the fact that really costly and I could get another BJD with that price. :<

If your answer is no, where do you draw the line?
To me, I would consider the kind of materials used, whether I would be able to get these materials locally and if I could design something similar for my doll. If it seems more feasible to go with DIY, I would. But if not, I will still weigh my options and consider if it is worth it.

    3. Personally, I wouldn't, but 'right' and 'wrong' don't seem to have much to do with it. I'd draw the line because 1000 for an outfit I couldn't even wear??? No. But others? Do what they want.

    4. I sew so it would be extremely unlikely for me to spend $700, $800, $1,000 on one outfit that I could make myself for like $60 in supplies and the cost of my time is free. The only time I buy clothes for my dolls is when I'm lazy and the clothes are cheap enough for it to be worth it to buy instead of make. Also if I'm going to spend $1,000 on an outfit, it's going to be for ME XD

    5. I wouldn't spend more $200 on a doll outfit (and even then it would have to be beyond exceptional) - I'm sure those $1000 outfits are nice, but there's no way I would be comfortable with that. It's not even about the affordability, it just the idea of it that doesn't work for me.

That said, for a long time my cheapest doll was wearing the most expensive outfit I own, so technically my answer to the original question is "Yes", since I have bought an outfit that was equal in cost to that particular (very inexpensive) doll.

    6. My dolls don't see that sort of price range for their clothes. If I'm having a hard time justifying spending $100 on the winter jacket I want for myself, even though I walk everywhere and need a quality jacket, my dolls aren't seeing a $100 outfit. But to each their own, I love seeing photos with elaborate outfits. :)

    7. I definitely would never! I had a hard time justifying the $30 cost of some of my very favourite outfits for my babies.

Though, thinking about it again, I suppose it would depend on the item! For a plan old shirt, I don't want to spend as much as I would on a human sized shirt. For more complex outfits that are obviously like, traditional outfits or other such things that cost ridiculous amounts of money IRL, I might give it a little more leeway.

    8. No way. Clothes that cost more than a doll are probably overpriced, and I would rather get a new doll, or pay some one else who makes clothes to make some for me for less.

    9. I honestly dont think its worth it spending on an outfit thats more or about the same price as a doll no matter how awesome the quality is :/ i rather use that money to get me a nice outfit then for a doll honestly xD the most i would spend on a outfit is $50 and even then i would feel at a loss xD i tend to do more trades for items at a high price to not spend more money :)

    10. Nope, no, never. I'm a really thrifty person when it comes to clothes, even for myself. Most of my wardrobe comes from secondhand stores and cheap Chinese shops. I rarely buy clothes for my dolls, because I actually enjoy sewing for them. When I do spend money for clothes, I don't usually spend too much (though my dolls are tinies), but in the end the clothes they wear the most are the ones I sew myself.
I can't even imagine charging 1k for doll clothes. I mean, I understand that it's handmade, ooak, and/or hard work etc, but still...Unless the outfit is decorated with gemstones and made from gold, then I don't understand why charge so much...It seems a little unfair.

    11. No I could not justify spending more money on an outfit than the doll itself, I would much rather add another doll. Even if I had the money to spend a lot on an outfit I think the fun is finding something that looks just as nice for a reasonable price. I would like to have a complete wardrobe of clothes rather than one item of clothing. Just because an item is expensive it doesn't always make it good quality. So personally I couldn't spend the money but I can see that if there is a top designer willing to make an outfit for your doll with a signed certificate that they made it then the price would probably be justified and it would be a collectors item in its own right and maintain its value.

    12. I couldn't imagine myself ever paying more for an outfit than for a doll. Anytime I have $100, I start seeing a new doll in my future. :D

    13. I probably would never buy an outfit that costs more than one of my dolls. Thats just asking too much *_*.

    14. Well I know I wouldn't be able to spend more on a outfit than I do a doll. Even if it was really well made. I just couldn't justify it for myself.

    15. No way in HELL! I could buy another doll for that kind of money!

    16. I don't think I could ever spend that much on an outfit.
I have hard enough trouble as it is buying dolls with how expensive they are...
I just hit around the 50 dollar mark per outfit..and I still think that's a little ehh..
But if that's what you want to do with your money, go for it!

    17. For an ENTIRE outfit? I won't rule it out, from the shoes to the accessories to the actual clothes. And if it's quality that fits my vision, then by all means, I might go for it.

    18. I don't think it's an issue of 'right' or 'wrong' so I'm ignoring the ethical wording of the first question.

My gut reaction to spending $300+ on an outfit is a resounding NO! However, if I were to add up how much I've spent on outfits, accessories etc for each of my dolls I think it'd be way over their original purchase price. Basically, I'm happy to spend money on outfits etc but I'd prefer to have multiple items to mix 'n match than one outfit they were stuck in indefinitely(due to funds running out!)

I guess it's just another example of how people enjoy the hobby differently. I get enjoyment out of fashion, so lots of cheaper items I can play with appeals to me more :)

    19. I personally wouldnt be willing to spend over 100 on a single set of dolls clothes, unless they were REALLY intricate. (particularly because my first BJD that's being shipped to me is a YoSD sized doll)

    20. Only outfit I could justify spending that kind of money over was a fer and that's only cause I don't have the money or time to make something like that myself...

Then again I have a boy incoming so fers is something he would never wear.
