Would you lie about your BJD?

Jan 25, 2010

1. I rather not lie about the cost of my dolls, but I certainly wouldn't tell them how expensive they are.

Two years ago, when I bought my first bjd, a large, inexpensive $220 ResinSoul Feng, I was really excited to share everything I could about my new passion with my family, so I told them all about the price, about how relatively cheap my doll was compared to other dolls, and about how customizable they were. My mom balked at the price and said she didn't like him. I live in a large metropolitan city in Texas that is still growing, but the city's population still has that "small-town" mentality and they can be very judgmental.

Since I bought the doll using my own money, my mother didn't say anything to medirectly. Instead, she took to other family members and vented on how childish, wasteful, and irresponsible I was being. She paraded my doll around, without my permission, as evidence of my babyish behavior. She spread plenty of hurtful, mean-spirited remarks about me. I don't think she ever thought that I wouldfind out, but her words eventually got back to me.

By that point, my mother's ill-natured words had spiked other people's curiosity. Everyone around me started asking questions about the doll for allthe wrong reasons. I was as diplomatic as I could be given the circumstance. I was also as honest and as curt as I could be so that I could put the matter to rest. When everything settled down, I just didn't bring up the subject anymore.

After that terrible experience, you can imagine that I no longer share many things with my mom as aresult. I would be a fool to share things about the hobby I like with people that I know are extremely judgmental and close-minded. For a long time I did not want to share information about my dolls with anyone. I didn't want anyone I knew to see them either.

If my own mother became so terribly disapproving over a $220 doll, I don't want to imagine what she can say about my most expensive doll. I don't want to lie about them either, so I just avoid talking about these dolls or displaying them when I know people are completely unfamiliar with them and they consider all dolls to be mere children's toys.

I certainly learned my lesson the hard way, but I know that not everyone reacts badly, and that there are many positive stories out there too.

2. I tell everyone about our dolls and that we are jumping into the community with both feet because the people rock! However my husband isn't about to tell the guys that he works with that he goes to doll shows with me. He works in the construction industry;)

So sorry you had such a terrible experience. People really can be so rotten. I think they judge so quickly without even trying to understand the appeal....and yet they probably go all out following a sports team or comics or any other "accepted" hobby! At least you have the doll community to support you.

3. I never hide nothing about my BJDs. Here, my classmates ask me about them and I tell them all the truth, so they started thinking that I was crazy, because a BJD doesn't worth all that money, plus they're ugly, as they say so XD. Also, my parets know extactly how much money I expend on a BJD, but I haven't bought any expensive doll yet, only one 1/4 doll. I haven't had problems with this topic yet, for luck.

4. My mum's a bit odd, she LIKES that they get me out of the house and that I've made friends via the communities and meets and such and that it keeps me happy doing crafty things (I prefer to sew clothes rather than buy, cause it's fun!) but she's not super thrilled at how much they cost (tho as long as i pay for them via money I earn via my hobbies then she doesn't mind.... my hobbies fund my hobbies XD) Dad is indifferent really, my room is filled with toys and figures cause i'm the geeky/nerdy type so it's just more stuff that i play with. I don't take them out in public (cept to meets; safety in numbers) and i don't tend to "play" with them when there's people at home (we have some mini furniture I SO want to do photos with......)
My grandma think's they're fab and keeps giving me sewing supplies for them XD

5. When I started in the hobby I told my parents about everything. They were pretty ok when I bought my first doll, because I think they thought I would stop in there... So basically when I bought my second and third I still told the truth about price and everything but I gave less information. When my fourth came I didn't tell them the price, I just said it was cheaper because it was smaller. When I sold some dolls my parents would get sad then (that was quite funny) and they would get kind of angry if I bought another one after, because probably they thought I sold that doll to save the money for something else. Anyway, nowadays I basically don't speak to them about dolls, I don't tell them how much I spend on them and they don't actually know how many I have. So I don't lie, but I basically don't speak about it either. I think they still think it was a phase I would soon get tired of.
I don't lie to my boyfriend or hide them from him because he likes them and participates of my family, and surprisingly my boyfriend's parents likes them as well, they know they are expensive but they don't know exactly how much, what in a way is better.

6. I've recently got into the hobby. So far, only my family knows about it but they disapprove. They don't like my doll because they say he looks creepy, which really makes me sad and I feel like I have to keep him safe somewhere when I'm not at home because my mum has threatened to sell him or give him away to charity. I haven't told them how much my doll actually cost me but it's my money so I didn't mind the price. Mind you I just got my doll (and he's my first doll too) since this summer and they are so creeped out by him. I keep telling them there's nothing wrong with it but they think I'm a freak or I'm weird or something.

7. Well, I never discuss my dolls except with the close friends and family members who understand me and my eccentric hobbies. I have never lied about the cost of my dolls. If a stranger happens to see me carrying a doll around and askes how expensive they are I just tell them I would rather not discuss it.

8. Probably haha! I wouldn't bring it up with anyone I'd be worried would judge me too much xDD

9. I try not to go out of my way to talk about the cost of my dolls. I really don't even like telling people how many, or what BJDs I own. I feel in some way like I am boosting or something. I just don't like to flaunt it, but if someone asks me I would tell them the truth.

10. lady-Alexiel if my mom did that to me i wuldent talk to her ever again yes my mom was furius and i thouth she was going to take something and smash my head in but she came terms with my doll and just shuck her head when i she was delierd. but she wulde never ever talke bad abut me like that!!!

11. The first person who found out about my intereset was my best friend - by "accident"... she was interested, but confused. I don't really talk about my doll hobby with her, but when she ask me something, I answer truefully... The fun thing: she just bought a motorcycle at that time and could relate to the fact, that I invest so much money for something I don't need, but really want ;)

When my boyfreind asked me about my hobby, he was also confused...they are always confused I think... but he was cool about it - even besides the fact, he really don't like dolls in general.

But it is something I love - we love - so I will not lie about it...even when it is sometimes awkward or confusing for others :thumbup

12. I would lie if necessary, but I'd rather not put myself in the situation where I'd need to. I wouldn't care what most people think but the last thing I'd want to do is make my mother worry. She'd be less concerned about me having dolls and more about the cost of them. Not that "why is that so expensive?" kind of worry- she is the one that raised me and has seen all the video games I have and knows darn well how expensive they are- but about spending a large amount of money at once. She's always worrying that I'm doing alright and making enough money to support myself, so telling her I'm spending another 300+ on more toys wouldn't do much good. My maternal grandmother had a heart condition where she couldn't get too excited and it's genetic. Last thing I need is to be responsible for killing my own mother via stress and worry. In a situation like that, simply not bringing up the doll or downplaying the cost is the best thing I can do.

...That and she's in the "dolls are creepy" camp.

13. I don't lie when I talk about my dolls. However, I change what words I use when discussing them with non-dolly people. Instead of saying BJD, I say collectable doll. Instead of saying faceup, I say I paint their faces on. Instead of describing the dolls size with words like SD, MSD, YoSD, I say one third scale, or one sixth scale, or just show them an approximate height with my hands. It's not lying, it's just putting things into words they'll understand. And when they ask the price, I just say I got a really great deal online. lol

14. I can't stand lying. I won't lie if asked, but I prefer to be vague. During my short time in this hobby, I've mostly used "a lot" and "too much" as descriptors for how much I spent on something. My SO normally doesn't pry. I make most of our money, and he trusts me to budget. I get the impression he'd rather not hear the numbers. Frankly, I'd rather not give them to him.

15. I think if it ever comes up, I'd not mention the price outright. There are a lot of people who might be pass judgment just for the sake of their own personal enjoyment of scrutinizing and gossiping about things they don't really ''get''. I know that seems pessimistic, but I feel like it's better to just avoid those situations altogether by keeping money talk out of the discussion.

16. Well they aren't a secret to most people as I post pics on my facebook page. But I never tell the price. That will be a mystery. ^_^

17. I lie by omission all the time.

Most people, even people that know me well (or think they do, ha!) do not know I am a massive doll collector and have been since I was a child. The subject is still a bit taboo unless you're a young girl or an old lady, and I am not either. I have doll friends and non-doll friends, and do not try to mix the two. ;)

18. If I'm asked about my dolls, I'd tell them about it. I don't think I'd openly talk about my dolls to them though. I'd rather not lie if asked about it.

19. Well, My mother knows about the price of BJDs, but not the clothes. There are some expensive clothes and I never tell her the exact price of it. I don't really keep this BJD hobby secret but no one around me knows that I have this kind of doll except few close friends. Planing to post some photos of my dolls on my facebook :wiggle

20. If it's a person out of my family and the dolly community, I would be telling them whatever they want to know outright without beating around the bush. I'm not good of a liar so my brother took it nicer than I thought. He is sort if an artist, and collects his gundams so he didn't react violently when I told him about it. In fact he got interested and he understood how I wanted an output of my creativity so he is cool about my soon to be hobby. My sister though, reacted as horrified as she is with dolls. But she is still supportive, BECAME supportive when she saw an Iplehouse guy I wanted to buy and we spazzed together! :) My mom doesn't have a clue about it, LOL.
