Would you sell a rare/limited/discontinued doll?

Dec 11, 2015

    1. If I was unsure about the doll and not totally in love with it, the temptation of selling it for big bucks would probably overtake me... :sweat then I could focus on things on my wishlist that I could buy with that money.

    2. For me, hunting down a limited is a way for me to see how much I want that doll. If I want to go through the hassle of searching the marketplace for months on end, I know for sure it isn't a thoughtless puchase.

Although I'm careful when thinking of selling a doll, when I really don't feel anything for a sculpt I do sell it. I've sold a limited doll and a discontinued doll before. One way of checking if you really wouldn't mind selling a doll is to put it away for a month, maybe two. If you haven't missed your doll in that time, it's safe to assume you won't miss it after you've sold it.

    3. Though I have never been in this situation, I think that yes, I would. If I didn't like their character I made or stopped liking it, I most likely would. I would certainly think on it for quite a while though.

    4. I have no problem parting with limiteds once I'm sure I don't want them.

Stashing them away for a bit is usually a good idea if you aren't sure. I find that if I haven't wanted to rescue the poor thing from the back of the closet by the end of the day, they're usually good to go since I don't miss them.

    5. Of course! If it's not working for me, best to sell it on to someone who will really love it and use those funds for something I love more. I do tend to think carefully about limitless first to be absolutely sure though.

    6. I would probably sell it if I found I didn't really want it anymore. Although the idea of rare dolls is very exiting, I would much rather have just regular old basic dolls I enjoy than rare ones I do not.

    7. I don't see ruling this out. Most ALL bjds are pretty rare. You might have a doll with a custom faceup that you will never find again, even if the sculpt isn't rare. Plenty of people sell them if they aren't bonding.

I haven't ever sold a doll--but this is mostly because I do like them all, and I don't need the money (I have other things to sell first, if necessary). But being rare would probably not be a specific issue, since just about ALL my dolls would be hard to find again, limited or rare or not.

    8. Been there, done that, sold the doll and moved on. She didn't work with my collection, and her being limited, rare, or highly sought after contributed nothing to my desire to keep her, even though I did keep her for a while because of that. I finally realized that was a terrible reason for me to keep a doll I wasn't loving, so I sold her on.

    9. I would. I want to cull my collection and sell/trade some dolls for the first time in 2016 because my collecting focus has changed somewhat and there are maybe 3 dolls I'm not wanting to mess with much anymore. I'd rather replace them with dolls I want more, no matter the expense or rarity. What I like is more important to me than how rare or valuable the doll is. Once I had my Grail and several of my wish list favorites, other dolls just became less important to me so I can now let them go. I'm not worried I will want them again or I'd keep them until I was sure.

    10. I agree with @Stormlight. Although I have only sold a few dolls, most being common, if something came up where I needed the funds I would sell the doll. No matter how much I loved it and how rare it was. Though it is true it will be hard to find again, I feel that it is just a doll. And when it comes to keep an extremely rare doll or pay medical bills from an unexpected illness, I'll have to pick bills. But that won't mean that that doll is gone from me forever. Because I will still have the picture I took of it. :chibi:aheartbea

    11. I seem to have a knack for accidentally choosing dolls right before they're discontinued, actually. Out of my 6, there's only one that's still currently available as a basic version from her company. The rest are all some wierd mishmash of limited/discontinued/hybrids incorporating limited or discontinued parts, and most of them are modded in one way or another. I wouldn't sell any of them, not because they're limited/rare but because I don't really impulse-buy dolls, or have a super huge collection, so every single one is a doll I planned out ahead of time, put a lot of work into putting together and modding, and really, really want to own. And also because I don't really look at my dolls as a reserve asset/source of cash flow/emergency money. People often have a hard enough time finding buyers when they're selling a doll for ANY reason--- expecting to make a quick doll sale and get my hands on money in an emergency situation where I need cash fast does NOT seem like a safe idea or sound planning.

    12. If I wasn't 100% sure I didn't like it, I might keep it. Most recently I've been running into space concerns, so at the moment I would be more inclined to sell. But in a world where that is not an issue . . . .

Most likely I'd store it away for a bit as a test to see how attached I really was.

This is pretty much the case whether or not the doll is limited/rare.

    13. I'm dealing with that issue now. I have one LE and one discontinued who are on the hot seat, but I want to be 100% sure. Until then, I keeping them here.

    14. I would do it under the condition that I don't bond with the doll, which would be weird because I take specific care to not buy dolls I;m not absolutely in love with. But if somehow I ended up with a doll I didn't completely love, limited edition, rare, standard, or otherwise, why not sell it? Not just because of the money to be had, but because that's maybe someone's grail doll and their chance to finally have their baby come home.

    15. I don't have any limited/discontinued scuplts yet but if I did I might if I couldn't bond with the doll. What's the point in keeping something you don't like if its going to make someone else happy

    16. I would never sell a rare/limited sculpt. I don't know if I'd even be able to sell a regular sculpt, I get so attached to things that it's near impossible to let go.

    18. If he was an impulse buy, yes.

I actually currently have a limited doll who I am always on the verge of selling. A monster skin Unoa, nothing fancy but still limited.

The funds I father from him would be going towards a doll that I actually had planned since the beginning.

He's a cute one, but I have no idea on what to do with him.

    19. I have done it in the past with a few dolls. I have had some dolls that were limited, and some that just weren't that common, and eventually they had to move on. While it was a little sad in all cases, there is only one I truly regret selling. I had pangs of regret almost immediately after leaving the post office. Oh well.

    20. Been there, done that. I have a terrible case of spontaneous shopping and low self-control, so I have bought more than one LE doll (because wow, that is the coolest shit since soda! MUST HAVE!!!) and then a few months later, when the novelty of just owning the doll wears off and I realize I had no plan for this doll whatsoever, or they just don't suit the rest of my collection, I'd sell them to someone who would hopefully do the sculpt justice :]

I have had dolls I regretted selling (Luts' black satyr unicorn body, for one... only the unicorn half though, I dislike the KDF body), but done is done, and I guess I can always hopp onto the next unicorn they release, or the second hand market.. :P
