Your doll's wardrobe: Empty or Bursting?

Jan 31, 2011

    1.
    2. I think it is charming that you have different drawers for each doll! My SD's exchange clothes and wigs frequently.

    3. Currently... my two dolls sit around nude (save for their boots) while I slowly get around to making them clothing. I do intend to make them a few staple pieces... but I don't think I will have a huge wardrobe for them. Maybe two or three distinct outfits of multiple layers and then strip away the excess for more casual looks which I can mix and match.

    4. Um, I think this says it all, this doesn't include the two suitcases that are packed with other clothing, wigs, armor and etc.
This is almost one quarter of my closet, all the blue and white hangars are my boys clothes, down to the purple dress.

    5. @SteamWitch : I chuckled, seeing your closet! ^
Because I fully look forward to mine becoming like that before long (but with much more eyesore-bright colored clothes!)
It looks nice, all hung up like that though. So that's reassuring. :sweat

Well, here goes my thoughts and tendencies on the thread's topic:

I have several dolls but only one is OT for DoA. I literally have one shopping bag full of clothing for each of my fashion dolls (Each one is a different size so they can't share..) all of which are in various stages of completion, but I do like to change their clothes at least once or twice a month, whenever I take them out of the house, or when I can remember to.

With my BJD though, I've been doing a lot better than I do with my fashion dolls. I've completed a couple of nice-ish dresses and clothes for her within the first month that I've had her, and have even taught myself the basics of knitting, with intentions to knit her some winter clothing by time that's in season.
Wig and eye wise, once I find the right look for the doll I tend to let that rest, but clothing-wise, I'd rather have one doll with an extensive wardrobe that I can change and play with, than several dolls with one or two outfits each. It's just personal preference and how I enjoy playing ^_^

    6. This is such a funny thing; I was wondering about this today! I thought after 4 years in this hobby I finally have a recipe on how I want each doll to have their wardrobe. I decided that there will be two to three outfits for each doll; one trendy, modern/casual and layered where I can switch out a top for a sweater and hat or coat and scarf (spring/summer; winter). The other a fantasy, historical or magical outfit depending on their character.

So far I have suitcases to store outfits and a special organizer with drawers that keep outfits that I would be using more often depending on the season.
I also use a "cosmetic" case for organizing doll eyes, zippered bags that hold either, fantasy colorful wigs, natural looking wigs and another for "highlighted" wigs. However, I am finding that there are about two wigs to each doll now so I place those with their personal bags that hold their accessories too.

Wish I could use an entire closet just for the resin kids!!!

    7. Do you get one default outfit for your doll and then move on to the next or do you buy several different outfits for your dolls?
I buy several different outfits for my dolls.
(If you only have one) do your dolls ever feel boring? Do you lose interest in them because you don't spoil or customise them further with clothing?
      N/A
(If you have many) how many per doll? Are you biased towards one particular outfit or do you change them regularly? When do you have too many clothes?
It's about two-three per doll or more. I change them sometimes. When it's cold, for example.
Do you buy or not-buy intentionally?
Yes, I buy outfits intentionally. Maybe it's because I'm looking for my doll's image.

    8. I now have my doll and can actually properly partake in these threads!
This makes me super excited. Ok, here goes :)

Do you get one default outfit for your doll and then move on to the next or do you buy several different outfits for your dolls?
I knew what her character would look like as far as hair and eyes, face up and silhouette, but the actual details still illude me, and so I got two dresses at first, and used the closest one to her style, then bought an ensemble, and so for now, she has three outfits to choose from, but she keeps one on most of the time, changing the details every si often to avoid boredom.

(If you only have one) do your dolls ever feel boring? Do you lose interest in them because you don't spoil or customise them further with clothing?
I only take her out when I plan on playing with her, so I'm constantly in awe of how great she is, simply because I don't see her often. But if I didn't keep building her closet, I'd probably lose interest. I think one of my main attractions to BJD's is that they're dressable in ways that humans are not.

(If you have many) how many per doll? Are you biased towards one particular outfit or do you change them regularly? When do you have too many clothes?
(I only have one, but I'm choosing to answer this anyway because I think it's also a cool question) I'd like to have a whole trousseau of clothes for my doll - like one of those old fashioned one with loads of pieces for every occasion, all beautifully matching and in gorgeous fabrics. I am currently biased tiwards the best outfit for her character. But as my closet grows, I assume I'll have one main outfit for everyday wear, and a bunch of others that I love for special occasions, just like with my own wardrobe. I have my favourite pieces for everyday stuff, and my favourite seasonal and occasion stuff.
I believe you have too many clothes when you forget about a lot of the pieces you have, and the pieces you have start to feel more like quantity is winning out over quality. I believe in a substantial amount of clothing, where every single piece is intentional and important. So as long as that stands, I don't think any amount of clothing is too many.

Do you buy or not-buy intentionally?
Do I buy intentionally? I guess that comes back to the last part of the above question. I know what I want and have a basic idea of what I want, so I buy what suits and what fits. I guess that's intentionally. I also wait for a while before purchasing stuff I don't have an immediate feeling of "THAT THING! I REQUIRE THAT THING!" for, because as I said, I don't want to have a lot of clothes where I only really love a quarter of them, and quantity takes over from quality.

    9. Do you get one default outfit for your doll and then move on to the next or do you buy several different outfits for your dolls? Hmm I'll know only with time. I think he'll have a deafult one tho.

(If you only have one) do your dolls ever feel boring? Do you lose interest in them because you don't spoil or customise them further with clothing? Of course not! He really likes the sweater and I like seeing him. With one, 2, million, or even without clothes.

Do you buy or not-buy intentionally? I still dunno. xD

    10. Ii don't have many clothes but what I do have gets shared. My girls have a sorta default outfit or style and I just mix and match what I get. I tend to buy more dolls than clothes, so they tend to sit around nekkid for awhile till I finally get around to what style they need.

    11. Do you get one default outfit for your doll and then move on to the next or do you buy several different outfits for your dolls?

Oddly enough, I don't have a specific outfit for my dolls. Most of my dolls (those matching size) share outfits or accessories.

(If you only have one) do your dolls ever feel boring? Do you lose interest in them because you don't spoil or customize them further with clothing?

      N/A

(If you have many) how many per doll? Are you biased towards one particular outfit or do you change them regularly? When do you have too many clothes?

I would say that if I don't change their outfits often, once a year I try and give some of my dolls a new faceup. I believe that having too many clothes is a subjective and very personal perception since different people see quantity in different ways. Currently though, I'm keeping my dolls' outfits in several stackable clear containers -one for clothes, one for wigs, one for shoes, and one for props.

Do you buy or not-buy intentionally?

I tend to buy outfits, shoes, or wigs that are on sale, so my purchases are premeditated.

    12. Do you get one default outfit for your doll and then move on to the next or do you buy several different outfits for your dolls?

Each of my dolls has a few items in their style they use. Enough for two or three outfits if you mix and match pieces. Issac always stays in the same outfit though. He doesn't look right in anything else. I need to work harder at finding him clothes.

(If you only have one) do your dolls ever feel boring? Do you lose interest in them because you don't spoil or customize them further with clothing?

I get bored if I haven't done anything new in a while. Currently I'm bothered haven't build a room for them or at least given them furniture to sit on.

(If you have many) how many per doll? Are you biased towards one particular outfit or do you change them regularly? When do you have too many clothes?
My dolls have styles they seldom deviate from. I have one box my bjd clothes go into, and when that is full, it's time to get rid of some. Just like my real closet.

Do you buy or not-buy intentionally?

I try not to buy since when I do I spend too much. Plus I'm trying to be a professional doll seamstress.

    13. Do you get one default outfit for your doll and then move on to the next or do you buy several different outfits for your dolls?
I have one main default outfit (bought) and a few other outfits mostly ones made by me.

(If you only have one) do your dolls ever feel boring? Do you lose interest in them because you don't spoil or customise them further with clothing?
nope I like being able to sew new clothes for my dolls and her default outfit is so adorable.

(If you have many) how many per doll? Are you biased towards one particular outfit or do you change them regularly? When do you have too many clothes?
I have 4 including my default for one doll and for the other I have 5 peices of clothing.

Do you buy or not-buy intentionally?
I do buy internationally because some of the international clothes are very well made and beautifull.

    14. Do you get one default outfit for your doll and then move on to the next or do you buy several different outfits for your dolls?
Several different outfits and they all kind of share a wardrobe.

(If you only have one) do your dolls ever feel boring? Do you lose interest in them because you don't spoil or customise them further with clothing?
I like customizing them occasionally cause its fun

(If you have many) how many per doll? Are you biased towards one particular outfit or do you change them regularly? When do you have too many clothes?
I am definitely biased towards certain outfits

Do you buy or not-buy intentionally?
I will buy both if the price is right~

    15. Do you get one default outfit for your doll and then move on to the next or do you buy several different outfits for your dolls?
For me, this depends on the doll. There are some dolls which I buy fullset because I adore the way the entire thing goes together. I bought Ringdoll’s Warren because I loved his Victorian/Western vibe. I try other clothes on him occasionally, but I know he won’t stay in them.
For other dolls, I love to change their clothes, but I don’t have a lot of outfits yet!

(If you only have one) do your dolls ever feel boring? Do you lose interest in them because you don't spoil or customise them further with clothing?
There is an element of boredom with some dolls (only in the sense of clothes, of course). I have a Ringdoll Misha B I ordered because I really like the anime-shinsengumi style, but he wasn’t what I expected when I got him. Nothing else has even remotely worked on him, so he mainly just sits on a shelf waiting. I hope to find clothes that make him pop one day, but it hasn’t happened yet.

(If you have many) how many per doll? Are you biased towards one particular outfit or do you change them regularly? When do you have too many clothes?
My ¼ girls have more clothes than anyone else, but that’s because I got a great deal on some clothes for them from other doll owners. I am biased toward particular outfits for them, and keep them in these outfits when they’re not out and being posed. I guess they have “dress up” clothes for play and “everyday” clothes for hanging out. :P
I don’t know when you have too many clothes. I don’t have a lot yet, so I haven’t reached the limit.

Do you buy or not-buy intentionally?
I don’t buy a lot of clothes, but that’s because dolls eat up all my money. After getting a doll, there’s barely enough money left to dress them, let alone dress them well or in a variety of ways. I’m saving up now for clothes, but I’m worried that I’ll just spend that money on another doll, ha ha.

    16. Do you get one default outfit for your doll and then move on to the next or do you buy several different outfits for your dolls?
I usually get a bunch of outfits for each of my dolls.

(If you only have one) do your dolls ever feel boring? Do you lose interest in them because you don't spoil or customise them further with clothing?
I do get bored with just one outfit, but for some weird reason that boredom makes me pal around more with the doll. I've never been able to explain that, but whenever I want something for one of my dolls I do more with it.

(If you have many) how many per doll? Are you biased towards one particular outfit or do you change them regularly? When do you have too many clothes?
I change Johnny's clothes on a regular basis, and I'll likely do the same with my future dolls. I do have a favorite look for Johnny, but he doesn't wear it all the time because it's a cardigan set. One simply does not wear cardigans year-around in southeastern Missouri.

Do you buy or not-buy intentionally?
Sometimes. If a piece is cute but too much like something I've already got then I don't bother with it. I also think twice about purchasing knitwear because I knit and crochet on a fairly regular basis. On the other side of the coin, if it's something intregal to my doll's character I grab it, no questions asked. Johnny's must-have trinket is a pocket watch, for example.

    17. Do you get one default outfit for your doll and then move on to the next or do you buy several different outfits for your dolls?
When I bought my doll, I ordered several outfits with her since I knew I'd probably want them at a later date anyway, & wanted to save on shipping. I'm trying not to buy anymore clothes for now until I have completed each look.

(If you only have one) do your dolls ever feel boring? Do you lose interest in them because you don't spoil or customise them further with clothing?
I think the most fun thing about owning dolls is that they are a creative process and therefore never really 'finished'. If I feel bored with a look then I work on a new accessory to make it more interesting.

(If you have many) how many per doll? Are you biased towards one particular outfit or do you change them regularly? When do you have too many clothes?

I have favourite pieces of clothing but I change them regularly. I think you have too many clothes if you never wear them, or have no real attachment to them. The same goes for clothing in real life I guess!

Do you buy or not-buy intentionally?
I think it's really hard to buy bjd clothes unintentionally because you have to spend so much time searching for them & making sure they will fit well. Buying impulsively would be very expensive too!

    18. Do you get one default outfit for your doll and then move on to the next or do you buy several different outfits for your dolls?
I have lots of clothes per doll. They are all cosplayers of some sort, so they've got various costumes, then they have their every day outfits (casual, dressy, winter, summer, etc etc). I sew. I've got an immense stash of material. So I can do this. I do have several full-set dolls but they certainly don't sit about in those outfits much.
(If you only have one) do your dolls ever feel boring? Do you lose interest in them because you don't spoil or customise them further with clothing?
I cannot imagine just dressing a doll & leaving it sit. Gag.
(If you have many) how many per doll? Are you biased towards one particular outfit or do you change them regularly? When do you have too many clothes?
I have no idea what this 'too many clothes' could be LOL.
Do you buy or not-buy intentionally?
I always make or buy clothes with either a character or a cosplay in mind. Now, MATERIAL, well, different story LOL.

    19. Currently, I have temporary clothes for my dolls, but in the future I'd like to have two or three different outfits for each. I don't want to get too crazy with clothes for them, but who knows. If I find something I think would look good on them I'd do my best to get it for them.

    20. I finally bought an outfit and wig after three months of owning my doll. She won't be naked anymore!
