Your FIRST face-up

Oct 26, 2009

    1. Oh, mine was AWFUL. I deliberately made a design without eyelashes, but the eyebrows were so hard! It took me all day to get them to a stage where I was happy with them!

But I kept the face-up because even though the experience was awful, I was so chuffed at what I'd managed to produce at the end of it, that the face-up is still amazingly special to me, even today. Sure, I've gotten better since then, but this face-up is such a part of Merc that I'm going to be heartbroken when it chips and rubs away and I have to re-do it.

    2. I'm actually kind of fond of my first face-up. I erased it because it wasn't 'right'.

      Here's a shot of it.

    3. My first faceup was not TOO horrible, but I had not yet discovered Flow Aid and small brushes.

    4. My first face up wasn't an absolute horror story, but it wasn't really good either. xD It was kind of in the middle, with, obviously, a few things I needed to practice on. In part I blame my little brushes betraying me. Haha. xD I was also kind of shaky honestly. Lol.

My second was kind of the same thing, honestly. But as expected, I got better with practice, and I actually really liked the third one I did. ^^

    5. I spent DAYS on my first faceup. It wasn't horrible...my doll didn't look ugly or something XD but it was very plain and quite boring. What happened was a few months later I changed his character completely and redid his faceup with the classic smokey eye and gave him some peircings ^^. He still has this second faceup but I'm thinking about redoing it...exactly the same style just better (:. Yesturday I just did my third ever faceup on my Bada..it's rainbow-y and colorful because he's going to be my "bright" doll. Of course I'm still not talented enough where I would open commissions or something O.O but I am honstly extremely pleased with my Bada's face!

I say anyone who wants to do their first face-up themselve should go for it! ;D

    6. ugh...I ended up with muddy looking pastel bushing because I didn't do it in layers. The lips turned out wonderful, but I forgot to coat before glossing, so it turned into a bloody mess. I got so mad that I used bright magenta pastel to draw a unibrow and some other shapes on his face. I figured since he was coated properly, I could get my rage on without ruining anything permanently.:sweat

    7. That is a BRILLIANT way to vent your rage. I approve!

    8. Mine was dreadful. I can't think of anything positive about it, except that I didn't do any permanent damage to the poor practice head. I'm glad I tried though, because now I know for certain that the money I've spent on company face-ups or commissions was definitely worth the cost! Plus I have even more appreciation for talented face-up artists now.

    9. I'm so excited and so nervous to do my first faceup. I'm assuming my first one will be pretty bad, but i'll get the hang of it :D

      Good Luck!

    10. Mine was horrible, being on a dollfie dream x___x I failed so badly the eyes, and was too scared to do the eyebrows that I just stuck decals for them *shot* The lips went well, with some pastels and gloss~ *loved to do it* But the eyes were omfg.

Here for a picture of only the eyes :p

    11. My first one was horrible, I never even actually finished it because I gave up (Too difficult I thought!) and send the doll to a faceup artist... 6 years later I'm actually a faceup artist. :'D It just takes time, patience, good materials and lots of do-overs. :)

    12. I'd like to think that I did fairly good! I overdid the blushing a bit, which I later tuned down... But the lips looked exactly like I intended and very natural, and the eye liner and glueing of the lashes turned out to be much easier than I expected...

The eyebrows... Well they are okay and I will keep them this way, but I could definitely improve the "drawing hairs" part a bit... They're not all equally thick. I think I will try using a very sharpened, wetted pencil instead of a liner brush next time.

    13. After reading so many of these comments I really want to give it a go! XD Unfortunately I don't have the money to buy a head and the equipment I'd need, but I'm planning on getting a job soon : ) So maybe then. I'm an illustration student and I love art so I like to think I'd be okay... but it really is something I'd love to try! : D

    14. I had previously been in the art industry and I suppose that helped me a little. The first faceup I did was on a pullip. Didnt turn out too bad, but was still not up to my own expectations  painting on a 3d object is definitely very different to painting on a 2d surface. Not to mention, the consistency of the paints that is to be painted on needs to have a good flow too to prevent clumpy-ness.

The biggest issue I had was getting my eyebrows to work.

    15. My first faceup was awful, but everyone said it's very good for a beginner. I had big troubles with eyebrowes - first I used thinner instead of retarder with my acrylics - all the time too thick lines. I removed the first faceup about 4 times before it was even finished, I lost all my patience. But it was so much fun the other side, so I continued, and now my most favorite part of doing faceups are the eyebrows :)

    16. click
I've found it! this is my first one ) 2008.

    17. Not bad! Her lower eye ashes are a bit thick, but other than that very well done! Especially the eyebrows look good and that's the trickiest part of face-upping for me...

    18. I have yet to try my first one. I have a couple of blank heads though. I used to make porcelain dolls, so I figure I have a head start in working on eye brows and lashes. I've been reading through tutorials, watching internet videos and I'm still nervous about starting. Thank goodness you can wipe it off and start over if you don't like it. :)

    19. Mine was ok, but then again I had only seen the dolls at my meet and most to almost all of the dolls there were sent to our local face-up artist. I knew mine was going to be bad, and joked with myself that as long as I seal and clean her face correctly I could always save up the money and have someone else do it. Now it's half a year later and I like doing face-ups only because I like seeing the blushing make my girl look alive... then again I won't do that to any of my other dolls Emily is just me special cupcake that gets moded and such, I swear I'll get her a better face up from some one with better skills then I, but until then I don't mind playing. (take note I redo face-ups a lot, like once a month at most and I still suck on those evil eyebrows. but you don't get better unless you try)

    20. My first face up xP Oh gosh, I gave up right away after completely failing at everything.

I immediately sent out my doll's head to get painted, which was awesome, but after some time, it chipped and I decided to clean off that face up and try out painting again (I was really in the mood to paint).

The second time I tried went SOOO much better than the first. Instead of giving up when things didn't turn out how I wanted, I kept practicing strokes and techniques and mastered lower lashes. Eye brows weren't too hard after practicing. I completely suck at lips though. And eye liner. I need more practice!
