Your FIRST face-up

Oct 26, 2009

    1. How did your first BJD faceup turn out? I was rather proud of it. Even eyebrows and eyelashes... could work on making the hairs thinner however. I just need to learn how to softly shade lips but otherwise it was ok. The only thing that ruined it was the fact that the primer/sealant I used was a semi-gloss (the can did not state this!) So off it came and now I'm going to redo it.

I have the thread up still: I hope this works

      And a quick image.

    2. My first face-up was good. Just a little hard with pastels because colors weren't strong, so at the beginning, I thought that it doesn't work.

Finally, I was proud of me, because I think for a first face up, it's good (except perhaps the eyebrows who weren't perfect).

I liked it so much that I decided to make the face up of all my future bjd :)

    3. I totally messed my first face up. I stripped her down and now I am scared to touch her. I need to find someone to do a face up for me.

    4. I don't have photos of my practices (thank god) but they were..... less than fabulous. Which struck me as insanity for a while because I'm used to painting a three dimensional surface. It just took time getting used to a new medium after working with clay sculpture and the glazes that takes. I have since done two of my doll's faces and one full body painting and I think I've improved. Or at least I'm not ashamed to take them out in public and say, "Oh that? I did that." XD

Since we can't post photos, here's the links...

And a link to my BBB Sprite who is the one with the body painting, which you can't see here, but I can always link anyone who wants to see it to his work thread. His is more fantasy based, but he's an elf, and he's purple. XD What else can I say.

    5. My first face-up... ? Just recently did it-

Far darker than it should have been. Lips looking absolutely terrible. Have to redo that some day, likely someday soon :|

    6. I personally don't have a response to this, but my first doll's faceup was done by a friend of mine who had never done faceups before. It was the most gorgeous faceup and suited him perfectly! Somehow she just had a natural talent for it ^^

    7. It was simply terrible. Actually I don't think I managed to "finish" a first face-up but the first one I did take pictures of was just the same as the almost-finished first face up. Used purple on the eyelids, the eyebrows were thick and dark, it almost looked like it was watercolored, and I didn't know how far away or how much to spray on the sealer.

    8. I'm totally jealous of those who have a natural talent for face ups. XP

Tessalina: That is a really good first go! :D

    9. Don't know if this will work:

This was my very frist "Bjd", a third or fourth hand Lishe head on an obitsu body, not perfect, her head kept dropping off!

    10. I had access to a random head on which I got to practice. Of course, I had an artist sitting with me to give me pointers on technique and tools. So the first wasn't horrid, the second was fun and wiped clean very quickly. When my wee girl arrived, Oh the patience and loving care! I finally let my artist companion (daughter) sketch in the eyebrows...which with all the layering are now just as asymmetrical as mine ;) The eyelashes turned into Harlequinns, her tongue very pink and textured...I'm pleased with her.

I thought I'd want to remove it later, but really. nobody else has their puki painted thus, and it's so her!

    11. I just did my first resin face-up not too long ago.
Honestly it wasn't as bad as I had expected, there were a lot of uneven aspects of it that annoy me but the dolls' sculpt is cute enough to see through the mistakes and I haven't changed it yet! :)

    12. Oh my gosh...my first faceup was a nightmare xD

    13. I watched a lot of tutorials on doing face ups before I even attempted it. I got all the supplies I needed. Almost finished it - just have to add the upper eyelashes and I will be done. It was a lot easier than I thought. Good thing about the soft pastels is you can rub out if you are unhappy with it. Of course I actually only have the head as I didn't want to muck it up and then have to get another head for the body so did the other way around. Waiting for the body to now arrive.

This is my first face up. Woo hoo it actually turned out well.

    15. My first faceup was...less-than-stellar. I don't know if I want to even post a picture of it, it was that bad (to me). I went a little crazy with the pastel and the dark lining around the eyes. And the eyelashes Hoo-boy. It lasted a week before I stripped my doll's face and did it over again after re-reading and re-watching a ton of faceup tutorials.

      Edit:

Booya- That faceup is so pretty! I'm a little jealous...your first one looks so good.

    16. My first faceup ended up making my boy looked like I took a black sharpie and colored his lips with it. Basically I messed it up and it ended up more gothy than I intended it to be.

    17. My first face up is surprisingly good, though it did take forever. I was also getting a private workshop by a good BJD friend who is a face up artist and has done face up panels before at cons. She let me do it myself though, and just showed me some things she was doing on some of her other commissions.

So far I've only done three face ups, but I love it, and they keep getting better too!

    18. Haha Oh wow my first faceup... it was... horrible *laugh!* I apparently thought eyebrows needed to be "stitched on" I wish I had a photo of it. He had eyebrows like a catapillar died half way across his face. and the lashes were just horrific. Admittedly I have seen worse but it took me 8 solid hours of work to produce that train wreck.

But its been several years and now things are looking a bit better :)

    19. I had beginners luck, and my first faceup came out awesome 8D
Apparently I didn't use enough MSC to seal it properly, so it ended up rubbing off after a small while.

Anything after that kinda just sucked, but slowly got better with each failure. I still wouldn't consider myself "good" though.

I am hoping to try my hand again when my blank boys get here, so I'll have fun, with each failure of course ;D

    20. My first face up was horrible xD . This was 2 years ago though , so I`ve gotten decent since . But still I prefer to order dolls with default faceups , because I generely like those and can work with them .
Here`s a picture , if you are curious of how I failed :

Also , my photography skills from then could not compare.
