Your partner and your BJD...

Feb 27, 2011

    1. My boyfriend of four years, then Fiance, and now soon to be husband in like two months... has always been supportive of them, he listens to what I have to say when I talk about them and has learned terms like "face up" and "Restringing" and knows the different sizes and all that. He lets me take them out with us (once to the movies haha) and even sits alone at a table with them in public when I have to get up and do something... It's really cool... I don't think he'd ever want one for himself, but he loves that I love this hobby so much and doesn't blink an eye when there's a doll on my arm... He actually payed for the majority of my first one (a KDF BORY) as a Christmas present... :D

    2. Well my boyfriend actually really likes my dolls and seeing as i need a lot of money that I don't have to get
      a body for my girl Pandora, he pitched in $153 and is working on getting me more ;-;
he is so wonderful (kinda feel badabout him doing that for me, never been into taking people's money D: )
His excuse is that his daughter deserves a body xD

He likes them a lot more than i ever expected >3< he even might get the MNF Karsh for himself :D
      Unexpected but very good ^-^

    3. my boyfriend of five years...doesn't really care about them. there just a doll to him...or rather just a hobby that im interested in. whenever i show him something he seems to have no interest what so ever...then yet sometimes he will come up with ideas of jointed toes or small little props..

    4. My boyfriend loves my doll, he even helped me find Chaucer's name (Chaucer is my BJD). He asks how Chaucer is doing and lets me make Chaucer's little bed tehee. My boyfriend is amazing. C:

    5. Boyfriend was a bit surprised at first when he found out I was into dolls recently. I think he thought it was kinda weird at first, but he knows I'm just a little girl at heart and am sometimes quirky and weird. (He also knows about - and teases me more about - my Hello Kitty obsession/collection.) I showed him pictures of a lot of dolls before really showing him my own dolls. He thinks some are ok looking, but says that he thinks some are creepy. I don't talk with him too much about the dolls, but I do tell him about how I've made friends and plans for meet-ups and such. More often I talk about the crafts I'm doing for the dolls, like the hat and skirt I knitted. Just yesterday we actually had a conversation about them, about how the dolls make me happy and are a good distraction from being sad. Since I suffer from depression, that's really important, and he knows it. So after that conversation he seemed more supportive than before. (:

    6. As I'm an art school graduate and a lolita/ steampunker as well, my boyfriend is used to me doing and buying weird things xD He's fine with it as long as I don't spend too much money... I recently had to promise him to stop buying doll clothes, especially socks for at least three months, since I already had about 12 pairs for only two dolls xD I must say he's right, I'm slightly sock-obsessed...
Other than that he's quite supportive, even plays along! A few weeks ago we were watching a movie at home and I had my little girl Ichigo (innocent looking 10-year-old) sitting on my lap. The movie turned out to be a little more gorey than I expected, and halfway some guys head exploded... I turned Ichigo around and said "O dear now she's all shocked!" Later that evening I couldn't find Ichigo, and when I asked my boyfriend where she was he said he put her in bed with Jozefien (old porcelain doll), "in case she gets nightmares." Awww!:aheartbea

    7. My DH tolerates it, I think. He likes the fact that I get sell the dolly clothes that I make (!) and he always expresses an interest in what I'm sewing, but I think that's as far as his enthusiasm goes. He can't understand why I 'need' more than one of each type of doll either

    8. How does your partner feel about your dolly collecting?
I suppose it is like with any of my hobbies. He realizes I have my tastes and interests as much as he does his.

Do they approve of it, tolerate it, or hate it?
I'm hoping he will just tolerate it but he might hate it. Just like my other hobbies, he doesn't care for them but appreciates that I have them and keep myself busy. However with BJDs... I don't know... He doesn't like dolls.
See I didn't really start getting hardcore until he got deployed. (Or maybe I got hardcore because he deployed? Hmm...) So he didn't get a chance to see my intensive BJD research phase. He didn't get a chance to see all the pics of BJDs that I would have shown him if he had been home. He left home that didn't have dolls and he'll come back to a home with four. :sweat

    9. Well, do not have a boyfriend currently but I would like him to at least be supportive of my hobby. I only have one doll so I dont think thats so much to ask for. I would absolutely love it if he was actually interested in the hobby but not a lot of people in my area know about Bjds. I dont think I could go out with someone who didnt like my doll and thought that she was a waste or something. She's very important to me and I think she's worth twice as much as I paid! (Just dont tell the doll company!) Plus, if he wanted me to get rid of her or "put her away" everytime he was over I would be pissed! Not only is that rude but it means he's controlling and I hate controlling people!

    10. I started this hobby early on, when i was about 13. When I was 14 I had my first serious boyfriend and I was so surprised at how well he took to my little obsession. Now I'm a sophomore in college and I just recently told my current boyfriend about my past hobby that I was going to take up again. He was actually really into it and supports my little obsession because I support his crazy little obsessions as well (the same situation as in the first post). I think that all couples have to put with those things, so it's just natural :) I know that alot of people get turned off by BJD's. Sudden exposure to it can create various negative perceptions about it which then in turn creates negative perceptions about the collector. However, my boyfriend loves me for who I am, so surely he wouldn't think I was crazy because of my harmless hobby. :)

    11. My husband is ok with it, doesn't know any names , but he can understand difference betwind U-noa and Volks, XD
He comes with me to the Dollpa, sometimes to Volks shops too.
I love dolls, he knows it and is ok with, I paid all by myself so really no reason to be against my passion.
I don't bother him with either.
Sometimes he bought me presents for my dolls, so sweet.
      I'm lucky, ^_______^

    12. My Mister is fine with my dolls. Probably the most interactive he gets with them is when he takes some photos but I can talk to him about all aspects of the hobby. By now, he's quite used to me looking at small-sized things when we go shopping, knowing I'm looking for "the boys". He particularly likes my two tinies and, whenever I mention I'm thinking of getting another doll, likes to tell me how much he likes the "little ones". Hint hint! Sadly for him, I have no intention of getting any more tinies just yet.

    13. My husband lets me do my thing since I don't complain about his Harley or WoW obsession. But he does get annoyed with how much I spend and how much time I spend on dolly role play.

But...he usually gets me a doll or doll stuff for holidays and I've caught him playing with Loki. The rest...he likes to be 'mean' to. (Not harmful, just pick on them) But Loki has a special bond with him. lol

He actually owns a doll now. I was going to sell my DZ Xi Aleister last summer. Hubby and I were not on great terms at the time, but he asked if he could buy the doll and bond over it. So I ended up giving him the doll. And he named him Ron Jeremy and he's a beer drinking, WoW playing, tv watching, butt scratching guy....which seems all too fitting, really....

    14. CloakedSchemer: And he named him Ron Jeremy....

*falls over laughing* Your husband really has a sense of humour.

    15. Sometimes I really don't know if my husband likes my dolls, tolerates them, or secretly loathes them.

He's always worried about the cost, and since we (usually) talk about any large purchases (anything over $150), I usually have to convince him that it's ok for me to buy such-and-such doll. Sometimes he's great about it, and other times he's a real pill. It's not that we're strapped for cash... he purchases items for himself that are fairly expensive. He just doesn't always see the dolls as worth the price (he fussed a lot over Hyperon's cost). :/

But sometimes he asks me questions about them, and I've caught him fixing Alna's wig and posing her (and I think he knows the names of most of them)! If I start talking about dolls, his eyes glaze over and he patiently listens for about 5 minutes until I realize that he's just not interested and shut my mouth. And he won't buy anything for me that I can't point to in person. I have a dollie wishlist (with websites and info on payment and whatnot), but he complains that it's just too hard for him to figure out.

But he encouraged me to go to the doll panels and meet dollie people when we went to A-kon in June. And he's gone with me and helped with a couple photoshoots.

So I'm really getting mixed signals, lol. I suggested once that he get a DD of his own, and he adamantly denied wanting one... but mentioned that he would be ok if I customized a 27cm "action figure" of his female game character, and pointed at a custom Obitsu... O.o

    16. my husband loves my girl, but he hates paying for anything for her :P which is why i do most of her shopping out of my own pocket when i get the money. otherwise he's full of photo ideas, is helpful in keeping her clean and such. yup. :)

    17. My guy doesn't really understand but that's fine :) He's supportive of me and is glad I've found a hobby to enjoy. We have a lot in common in terms of hobbies so it's nice to have something that's just mine.

    18. My husband is ok but sometimes, he is tired to expend my money in this hobby ! But Mine, can Help me really when i need a translation, when i need to writte to Volks ! He is very serious ! I can trust him when i go to do a Full choice or anything ! but that not interesting him XD !

    19. My boy is remarkably supportive about these things, even if he doesn't understand it. He's glad I have a hobby I enjoy so much, and that it encompasses so many things I love (sewing, photography). We have so much in common and do so much together that we both recognize how good it is to have something to enjoy apart. He's not entirely sold on how much they cost, but we come from very different backgrounds and he's admitted that some of that is just jealousy: I could afford to spend my money on something like this while he could not.

      Many of my friends are somewhat less supportive, but that's a story for a different topic. ^^;

    20. My boyfriend of over 2 years thought it was absurd at first when I showed him the doll and the cost. But he understands I love them so he tolerates it pretty well and would look at pictures of dolls that I show him and would give his own comments about them. Occasionally, I'd make mini bets with him in our daily lives and that if he loses, he'd have to buy me something BJD related. He actually agreed to it. He still doesn't like the fact that they cost a fortune lol.
