Your true reason for having a doll?

Aug 16, 2008

    1. I want to be able to make clothes for my guy. My mom used to make clothes for my sister and I want to experience making something for him.

Also, I'm an illustration major and I need a model. However, I don't like asking people to pose for me, so this is the next best thing. I'm hoping he will help create creativity in me.

    2. I'm still waiting for my first bjd, but I got her (B&G Rin/girl) because I enjoy various crafts, including spinning yarn and knitting, and photography. It takes so many hours to spin enough yarn to knit a hat or scarf for an adult that I'd love to design, spin and knit a sweater that doesn't take a hundered years to complete. As for the sewing, I'm a bit older and it's getting to be a challenge to sew for my fashion dolls, so the 1/3 scale is going to be great for designing and making clothes. For photography, I have had a blast shooting my fashion dolls and can't wait to set up elaborate shoots for my new girl.

    3. Like Tenuki, I don't have my first doll yet, but mainly... Creativity is the root of it, but it all lies in the fact that I've this character in my head for about 10 years now. Anyone and everyone who likes to design characters for RP, stories, fun, art, etc. knows that most of your characters fade overtime or never quite come to fruition and become a full 'person' if you don't put enough love and care into their creation.

Well, Mira's my longest standing character next to 1 other, so I thought I'd commemorate that with getting a doll version of him as a physical representation of him. And let me tell you, it's been a hell of a time finding the perfect mold!

    4. Tell me about it

I've always loved dolls, but for years I never really saw any that really grabbed me. The first time I saw one I was entranced. The first time I held one I was absolutely and hopelessly hooked. :3

Sculpture really appeals to me, as well as costume, customization, the ingenious engineering of their joints... BJDs combine so many of my interests, especially nice that I can take my characters and find a physical form for them. There's something so satisfying about that, and brings you closer to the characters.

Finding just the right head and body molds can be quite a challenge- Sometimes you'll find a headsculpt you feel is perfect... but there isn't any body that works with it! So frustrating XD
Luckily, I think I've finally found the right molds for the characters that I really want to have, even though their faces will need minor modifications.

As others have mentioned, they also make nice companions. I'm too unwell to work, and I can't get out of the house much. Both my parents work, my older brother has moved out, and most of my friends live too far away to visit- so I'm typically alone in the house all day. Somehow, having them sitting next to you makes you feel less lonely. They're also good companions for those days when you just don't feel like talking with other people, for whatever reason. Sewing and designing clothing gives me something to do (when I'm feeling ambitious enough).

So, BJDs are great for me, even if I have to wait a long time to get my dolls.

    5. It depends on the size of doll. My big dolls I love to coat with impressive clothing, and my little dolls I love to set up little dioramas and "scenes" of. Also, all of my dolls have characters, mostly ones that existed before the dolls, from my own stories or stories I am a fan of. It's fun to pose them in ways that reflect these characters, and to match up costumes and settings.
Or, ocassionally, I pose them in ways that DON'T match up with their characters just for laughs (like giving the tiniest little 26cm femme-doll a whip and making her chase the 60cm dolls around). Of course this is way more fun since the whole household shares and plays with the dolls, so they come home and see the dolls they had thoughtfully placed are doing something inappropriate and go "AUGH!!" :P

    6. One of my best friends got me hooked. Not long after she got hers I got mine!!!!!!

    7. I got my gals because I desperately wanted a physical, touchable, posable representation of my characters. And having them around has only helped things! ...And I got them to make things for. Tiny adorable things for tiny adorable things? Fantastic.

    8. I got my dolls because I thought they were truely beautiful objects. Also love sewing and designing and these dolls are a great outlet for that. I'm one of those people that don't stick to hobbies for long, but have been interested in BJDs for about 4-5 years now and that's a record. BJDs hold my interest like nothing else can.

    9. Your true reason for having a doll?

I just LOVE dolls..:aheartbea..always have, always will....no other reason needed!! ;)

      xen :)

    10. My true reason for owning a ball-jointed doll is to have a toy. It's definitely not one of the most eloquent or mature reasons, but that's mine. I love well-made, high-quality toys.

    11. Actually, when I first started, I had the same reason: I wanted to use the doll as a model for drawing.
But life got busy, the doll got put aside... and when I picked her up again, my priorities had changed.
Now, 'officially', I have dolls to act as models because I have been encouraged to sew doll clothes to sell, to earn a bit more income.
But the real reason? I just like the dolls. Heh... And yes, they do seem to add a sort of 'positive energy' to my home. Perhaps, partly because they have such pleasant faces...

    12. I chose to get my Elis because she is a physical representation of a character i have floating in my head and I like collecting toys- always have and always will. I don't need another reason =p

    13. I wanted...to carry them around to stores? No joke X_X Pathetic reason but that was why. Now I have them because I love dressing them up, doing photostories/shoots and just...keeping them in my room. They also represent a lot of my characters for my novels sooooo that helps A LOT

    14. Hm...Photography mostly. And I'd really like to learn to sew! I draw out clothing designs but I can't make anything. I also love how customizable they are. I love it! All the clothes and wigs and colors... And stuff. They're just so fun :) Also, the Doll community makes me think of the anime Angelic Layer. And I feel like this is the closest thing I'll ever get to that. haha ^^

    15. i just like to look at them lol

    16. Mostly to sew for. My doll can wear things I can't or wouldn't wear myself, but still like the look of.

    17. My reasons would be:

      a) I love art, and collect expensive artbooks (Spectrum, Apple, anime/manga/video games)
      b) BJD encompasses several art forms (sculpture, painting/makeup, fashion)

      a + b = c, where c = my inevitable interest in BJD. :]

    18. I wanted a BJD because I like dolls- and I really loved the idea of being able to customize a doll so completely. I don't have any problems making friends (even though I move alot), and I prefer humans anyway- especially now that I'm at college (XD) so my dolls are really just like action figures of the characters I've created.

    19. Because as a writer and artist, I have always wanted to bring my characters to life as far as I could, and BJD were the next step, as far as I could see.

Because they're easier to hug on than 1/6th scale dolls

And because EVERYONE on the Junkyspot forums had to keep posting pictures of THEIR 50cm obitsus, until I decided I needed one, too.

    20. I blame Angelic Layer... <_< No really, I do. Plus they're just so pretty. That's my real reason for having them lol But I do really like having an art form that's so customizable, plus it got me into photography and sewing, both of which I didn't like before.

*totally didn't even answer the question lol*
