Your true reason for having a doll?

Aug 16, 2008

    1. I have a tremdous amount of stress in my life and the tiny dolls make me happy. I don't play with them (just dress them but when they are done just looking at them makes me feel at ease, and I need that. :)
Occasionally they bring some stress (something I bought doesn't arrive) or when a sculpt isn't for me and I sell one, to make room for another. But the ones that are really my favorites just stay posed and on display.
I can't really make friends (i'm a caregiver) and I have no time to cultivate friendships, so the tiny ones fill that gap

    2. When I met my first BJDs, I realized how much they can be companions, because I was instantly drawn to one of them. Even though she was someone else's, it made me instantly want one because they can be friends who are always around. And they're so cute!

    3. My true reason for getting my first one was that I wanted to see whether I would like them. Thus a mini -- Toshi, my whiteskin DZ Megi. And he was nearby and I could act on impulse rather than wait and talk myself out of it.

After that it was alllll "because I like dem!" :)

    4. Ive always liked them but I guess the real reason is to immortalize a character who is a memorial of sorts to some one who died a long time ago. Its my way of keeping them alive i guess in my own messed up weird little way. I am hesitant to say too much as I know most people would say I am crazy but to me its important as was this person.

    5. Asides from being the perfect model for drawing and such, I hope that I can someday sew all these designs I've been doodling..

I agree with OP, having dolls with you is really therapeutic, in a sense. Whenever I'm upset or not feeling well and have my doll with me, I hug her and feel like there's something 'pulling me toward' her, kind of like she understands how I feel and is here to comfort me~ I don't know, I've never had this strong a bond with an inanimate object asides from my childhood stuffed animals.

    6. I have a determination to obtain all things cute! >w<

    7. For my bro to use him as model for his photography, for my sis to do her drawing of poses and design of clothing for her. Simply as a model for both my bro and sis

As for me, he shall be someone for me to love and to play with~ and being my audience when i am practising my piano pieces and paying attention to songs i wrote. Simply a child, a playmate and an audience for me.

*oh and as someone who is loyal and will stay by my side 4ever*

    8. Since I was I kid, I've just loved little trinkets that I can drag around with me (at any given time I have a stuffy in my Locker and 30 stuffies on my bed. And my BJD in which ever room im in ^^; )

    9. I own him for several reasons. Sewing, Photos, Attention, and Company.

I enjoy sewing but sometimes i don't have the funds to make big things, so I can stay in practice with doll clothes.
I like to take pictures. I am a bad photographer though, I'm more of a scrapbooker, memory saver than an artsy picture taker. figured this could help round it out.
I love taking him places where people will see him. I love to see their positive or negative reactions, both bring me great joy. The looks of fear are my favorite though. What can I say, I like to scare people.
Lastly, he is good company when I am alone. If I am afraid at night he is there to protect me. I have a friend in class when he is tucked away in my book bag (unless I poke his head out to look at the girls behind me, they hate that.)

    10. I understand what you're saying entirely. I'm not to the stage where I have to think about that (thankfully), but it is certainly something that has crossed my mind.

    11. Completely agreed! My Ophelia interchanges between goth and loli whenever she feels like it. Wears frilly, pretty, puffy dresses one day, then goes the punk in chains outfit the next.

I think I would have rocked the goth look for a while as a teenager if I didn't have such a restricted upbringing. I feel like I'm reliving the adolscent years that I would have wanted through my girl...:)

    12. ...I don't think thats crazy at all! It sounds like a very beautiful way to keep somebody's memory alive.

    13. For me it's mostly I see it as a really well made expensive toy. Also as an artist I would use it for reference to draw and I love looking at aesthetically pretty things, so if I have a bad day I would be able to come home and look at my doll and play to relax.

    14. I've been a homeschooler for almost ten years... that's a good long time out of the social loop; no friends so aquaintances.. nothing for 8 years. So I think my reason for getting (not quite yet though) a doll...

    15. Honestly, I wanted a doll because I thought they were all gorgeous and that I'd love to have something like that. Well, at first, that is what I thought. After a while, I began to see how much fun it would be! To me, they're not just pretty things to look at - you can dress them, change their eyes, change their hair, change their face-up, and make them pose for pictures! So, I guess I wanted one because it would make me happy.

    16. They're the release and medium of my creativity :) for me they're very fine piece of art, it feels oddly satisfying to just admire the details in their sculpt and just be amazed at the craftsmanship.

I just love on how realistic they look in pictures whenever I photograph them, and they make good drawing reference as well.

BJDs are customizable so the possibilities with them are endless, I love it~

    17. I purchased a doll for a couple of reasons. I love the look of the BJD. I wanted to dress him the way I could never dress kids. I also bought him pure full and enjoyment.

    18. I recently got my first pukipuki, and tbh the reason I wanted her is because I thought she looked beautiful and cute! The weird thing now is I can hear her "talk" to me (lol does this makes sense)? and now I would say she is like a companion, something I can talk to! :)

    19. I got into them because they are beautiful art objects that are customisable and you can really make something unique out of them. I have seen what others are doing over at The Joint and I am seriously impressed.

As a life-long model maker who is bored of the same old wargaming stuff, has no interest in historical military model making (there is only so many ways you can paint a Kubelwagen within the bounds of historical accuracy - I think about half a dozen ways), and I don't have time to devote to new armies, I think something a bit bigger and singular in nature will be right up my tree.

Plus I will be learning new modelling skills: sewing, wig making, face-ups, etc.

As for company, I am very used to keeping my own company almost all of the time and very rarely seek out human company - whether or not these dolls will become a substitute for human company is debatable, as I don't feel that it is a lack. I choose to live alone rather than being alone out of necessity or pure circumstance. I have never married, and I very much doubt I ever will do. I have never lived with a woman either, and I have only ever flat shared once and hated it.

      Phil.

    20. I have lots of reasons, but I think my main reason is because I really love anatomy and bodies, and many BJDs are such perfect little sculptures from head to toe. The dolls that have too simple anatomy or the ones that aren't anatomically correct really don't interest me much. The ones where you can see the thought put into all the subtle detail of the body, and carefully shaped joints that integrate gracefully into their human anatomy, those are the ones that fascinate me. Most of the dolls on my wishlist have unusual and detailed bodies.

Of course, I also love the Asian aesthetic and think their faces are very charming and alive, which is something I've never felt about other dolls. And the way they're so readily customizable is a huge plus.
