Your true reason for having a doll?

Aug 16, 2008

    1. I never though about it. I just love them.
They are beautiful objects, and they allow us to be creative.

    2. Not only am I collector of just about anything and everything (nail polishes, crystals, coins, etc) I think my doll is going to be something different than just a collector item.

My day-to-day life hasn't been going that great, especially at home. Between me having to care constantly for my father, my childhood physician that I trusted dying, and the constant arguing going on in the house, a doll will be a coping mechanism I need. It'll help me de-stress while expressing myself outwardly. I won't feel so lonely either.

    3. I've always had a soft spot for toys in general, but especially child dolls. We moved a lot, and I was pretty socially inept as a child, so my stuffed animals and my American Girl doll were my friends through grade school. As an adult, I restored the AG, and that eventually led me to loving the incredible detail and flexibility of BJDs. They're easy to sew and knit for, it's fun to make props for them to hold, and being able to customize everything down to hair, eyes, and faceups beats the heck out of my old Barbies any day. :P

My focus tends to be on "child" dolls, rather than teen/adult dolls, because I never bonded with fashion dolls as a kid, but those model kids were just like little people to me. So expect me to buy and post photos of mini and tiny dolls with childlike bodies. :)

    4. Initially, it's just that I like having these pretty/cute/gorgeous things. My off-topic collection are still mostly just that. However, BJDs pretty rapidly took up a place that used to be fulfilled by my RPGs - I adore character creation and world creation. My dolls are my characters now, and both fuel and embody my imagination.

    5. My reason before buying was because I truly fell in love with this virtual band called Mistula. They're a band with BJDs as members and I really love them. I love how the person behind them were able to make photostories and was also able to make them look alive. Not only that, they seemed to be a great art outlet.

Much like everybody else said, they do fit the category of being the best model for clothes, photography and all artistic projects you might think of.

Although when I got my first BJD I found that it;s more than just having a doll because I wanted one like the idols I saw. In fact, when I received her I immediately bonded with her. It made me realize that having a BJD isn't just about the physical artistic outlet that I once thought of. They're actually more than that..

I went into depression probably a few months after getting my girl and that's when I realized that she's more than just a doll. She became my emotional outlet. I talk to her and often times I hug her. It's probably weird for others to read this. But I find it really relaxing when I fix her hair, change her clothes and make her look better. Even though I get into that emotional black hole, I truly believe that my dolls help me get away from that black hole. When I'm depressed I dont really want to talk to people, I just dont. Either they never know what to tell you because they've never felt that feeling before or they still dont know what to tell you because they're also fighting their own fight. So having a BJD is te best thing that ever happened to me. They became my life support and I'm thankful for that. So that's my reason for having BJDs.

    6. I have always loved miniatures, since childhood. I think I was drawn to collecting the BJDs because of being able to create their own miniature spaces, clothes, toys.....then I started the photography. I have the most fun making rooms and things for photo props.

    7. The very first reason I got into bjds was their pretty faces. The second one is that I want to play dress up and fit them with all sorts of clothes. SD sized bjds are just perfect for me since I like bigger dolls and their proportions are pefect for all clothe styles.

    8. Because they're beautiful. I also enjoy coming up with their backstories and personalities, but I got into the hobby and stay in it because I want to look at pretty things.

    9. so I can sew cute little outfits as I find it relaxing and fun. It gives me crafting with a purpose.

    10. I've always been a collector, and when I saw these I had to have at least one. The fact that you are able to customize them is amazing and they're beautiful.

    11. I definitely am the collector/hoarder type... but my main reason to start collecting dolls was as models for my photography.

    12. I guess there are many reasons behind it.
The 'official' reasons that I told my family were:
      1. Creating my own characters in a doll form instead of just writing about or drawing them. <= Like a third step to my character creation process. I always had felt like something was missing even after drawing a character. I wanted them in some kind of form that brings them as close to reality as possible. BJDs are the perfect way of doing so.
      2. Drawing references for poses.

But the more 'inofficial' reason just for myself is the fact that now I don't have to get lost in my thoughts and dream world that much anymore. For my precious characters are here with me and keep me accompanied now. I guess it's like a little therapy for myself. 'Hey, you don't have to close your eyes and use your fantasy to see your boys and girls. Since they're sitting right there on your shelf, being with you. Do your work together with them and once you're done together you can play~' <= Yeah, I am crazy. But that's how it is for me. ._."

    13. I love customizing them and taking pictures. I like to create my own characters and stories with them. They're very much a creative outlet for me in more ways than one.

    14. I already make plenty of my own characters (maybe too many, haha) so bringing them into a 3d form would be cool! I also like how artistic you can be with them, especially when it comes to faceups or blushing!

    15. Iv'e always loved dolls & after seeing some of the cute BJDs I knew I had to have one. The one I really wanted was SOLD OUT :...(

However I had a FCS MSD made up for me and she is so lovely. :D

    16. I like them because they're like real life anime characters that I can customise

    17. Well, the first one was because I wanted to make pullovers and a small doll meant near-instant gratification. The 2nd one, which I bought alongside the first one, was because I wanted 'added cuteness'. the 3rd one was a doll I had planned to buy when I was going to get a better job. As she turned up something like a lot earlier, she became my cuties' first big sister. Then I decided I needed to feel more committed to my future than I had been for years: so one doll for one step to a better future. Then, by a twist of fate - I mean several twists of fate [IMG] - I came too many times across Feeple65 Chloe, and thought she was an even better commitment-inducing package than any of the previous dolls. I tripped on the purchase button. My boy was a more long-drawn process: I just wished to clothe him the best I could. The last one was just an opportunity too good to pass and I wouldn't have missed her for the world.

    18. My interest in bjds and other dolls has become a little world I can lose myself in, they have provided me with something I can enjoy alone, and a distraction from my health issues..and many family issues..

    19. When I first got into BJDs I just loved them because they looked pretty and they were customizable. Nowadays it's a good way to indulge in several different crafts, making miniatures, sewing outfits, photography, etc. There's a lot of room for all sorts of different arts and crafts in this hobby and I think that's probably the best part about it. Crafts are fun and relaxing, and now I feel like I actually have more of a reason to do them. Like, why would I make a pretty hair bow? I had no reason to do that before, now I can make them for the dolls. The same with sewing, before I just made hammocks for the rats, now I can make clothes for the dolls (and it's good/cheap practice for if I decide to make human sized clothes one day). It's a very versatile hobby that caters to many different crafts and interests.

    20. i like antique toys and dolls, then i came upon these and added them to my collection , mostly for photography.
