Your true reason for having a doll?

Aug 16, 2008

1. I think that my doll'll be for art and creativity: drawing, designing, etc. But it's not the reason I need doll, I just want to buy it that's all. They're beautifull and lovely and there's many things to do with them, I'm expecting to enjoy my free time with them, but that's all. Maybe something'll change after I get my first doll complete.

2. Just because I have always been fascinated with dolls. I don't really know why. I really get pleasure having them and playing with them.

3. This might sound slightly bad but one of the reasons I want a doll is because I get lonely in the day sometimes (I don't have a job atm due to illness and both my parents work) and so it'd be nice to have company in the day, even if it is resin company XD

Also, I adore the customisation available <3 I love the idea of having a doll who can wear all the clothes that I can't, haha!

4. I was first captivated by their beauty, and then I began to see them as shells for original characters of mine who are near and dear to my heart. I love my characters, and in a way, I see them as extensions of myself, with certain traits I wish I had, or amplified traits that I do have.

So in a way, I suppose my dolls could then be considered an extension of me, though that's not really my intent :)

That, and PRETTY! XD lol <3

5. They are like my children that don't complain and just sit around patiently, needing nothing. They are there to comfort me when I need it.

6. The dolls themselves are my reason for having them. They have nothing to do with filling any void in my life. I've been a collector of various things as long as I can remember & of dolls for over 20 years. I simply like to surround myself with beautiful things & since I discovered dolls, things that also provide an outlet for my creativity, whether it's making clothes & jewelry, creating a little universe or simply arranging a nice display.

While some people have deeper reasons for getting dolls, I always worry a bit when they say that they need them to keep them company, combat loneliness & such. It's important to remember that no matter how much we personalise them, they are, in the end, merely dolls & no substitute for real life & real friends.

7. My true reason for having a doll is :
Because I love the doll itself. :)
And my doll really help me to recover my photography passion. :3

8. I don't have one yet, but I know which doll I want, and I'm saving for her. The reason I want her so bad is because BJDs are the perfect physical manifestation of your characters. It's a way to express yourself in a different art. Also, these dolls are some of the most beautiful things I've ever seen. :)

9. Mostly because I think they are beautiful. But I am also very interested in fashion design, so I plan to make my girl lots of clothes. I also love photography, so the fact that they are so photogenic is another plus. And I also write, so I plan on creating a character for her, and writing about her....

10. for me the dolls that I have represent some aspects of myself, but also they partially managed to fill up the loss of a loved one, without getting too personal, they helped me find some peace with the loss of our first child. I didn't realise this untill later, but when I did realise, a heavy load dropped off my shoulders.
It wasn't the reason to actually get a doll, but reasons change, it makes perfect sense to me now 8)

11. Growing up I always loved dolls. In some way or another I was looking for a sort of companion. When I discovered ball jointed dolls for the first time I was amazed. I had never heard of them before and was struck by their personalities.

I bought my first doll in June, and I now have five (plus two non-BJDs). I know that's quite an explosion but each doll has a specific purpose in my life. They're all so wonderful. Some travel with me wherever I go, others keep each other company. They're my little family who is always there to support me.

I couldn't see myself getting through a day without them anymore. I'm alone occasionally, but even when I'm not, I still need them. They enrich my life. Besides my fiancee, they are the only individuals who I would want to be around constantly. I have some anxiety issues that lead to seizures sometimes, and they help me cope.

The true reason for having my dolls is the same as yours. ^_^ They are people to me.

EDIT:

I do have quite a bit of friends and a large family. I am by no means a lonely person. I am constantly busy whether it be with classes, singing at an event, out with friends, at a family function, conducting an interview for my website, etc. However, amidst all of the people I interact with, I still enjoy and look forward to the company of my dolls.

In response to Gwydion, I don't know if others feel the same, but dolls are not a substitute to real life for me. They blend in quite nicely.

12. I think the dolls fill a part that might be lonely in yourself - they can keep you company + they're so beautiful... I think thats why I started getting them... Plus I've collected dolls for as long as I can remember in my 19 years of life/started this hobby fairly young... It was just natural that I would "need" one myself~

13. i fall in love with them...and i just want to admire their perfect beauty now and then.

14. I have an undying need to mother something and be the only one they can rely on. I like taking something that is merely a shell and breathing life into it. ♥

15. Really odd... I never even thought of this.

Why? Part of it might be that i've never had a hobby. I have a lot of DVDs and I'm a snobby movie buff, but I'm no trivia fanatic, and not a collector either. I like anime, but It's not a huge, driving force in my life, and I don't have a collection. Again, It doesn't help to be very very picky.
I have some hand-me-down magic cards from my brother that I like, but I can't play well, and I'm not interested. I read but i'm not a reader, knit but I'm not a knitter, write but I'm not a writer per se... you get the drift. Many people consider art as a hobby, but as I'm trying to make it a career, it's no longer a hobby. It's... serious business now. (haha)

Basically, the doll hobby appeared to me at a very odd time in my life, and certain dolls are making themselves known as who they'd like to be. I'd like to try my hand at just about everything to do with these dolls. I like the idea of having something I can purely enjoy and really be into. It's something I didn't expect and wouldn't have predicted -and that, coupled with some unusual coincidences have convinced me to try out all this doll nonsense.

16. i wanted them because i wanted a companion.
as i was thinking of not getting married, so i was considering getting dolls as kids, because they don't complain, scream and shout.
and they look so pretty. and realised that there is so many varieties of dolls all over the world, fairy , vampire, animal dolls.
after getting one doll, it motivated me to sew more clothes for the doll, and i got interested in doing faceup and doing photography.

17. i am a very lonely person, and in real life very unsocial, this is because of my mental illness, i've lost many friends (even because of my dolls).
But still i need their company, though i know they are just made of resin....

18. Well for one, i'm terrified of people. i mean i'm a girl who would rather go to the mall on the weekday when nobody would be there hardly haha.

but also i want these dolls because i'm 18 and a few years ago i found out i have uterine cancer and theres a good possibility i wont be able to have children. So if BJD's are the closest as i can get for now, that will make me very happy.

19. Well, ever since I saw my first real BJD on the Volks website ages ago, I thought it would be nice to have one, one day. I knew almost nothing about those dolls except that they're made of resin and how big they were (approximately). I just found them cool - and beautiful - so I wanted one. Mind you, Luken's not exactly what I'd call beautiful *sideways glance* but he IS cool. :) So, basically, I got him (and the other two, too) because I wanted him and could afford to buy him.

20. I have to say that I have always been a doll person since I could remember. When I discovered BJD I was so excited because although I still love other types of dolls, BJD seem more mature and hold my interest now. They are not only beautiful, but also you can make them your own through customization and create whole personalities for them. Those reasons aside they also make great decoration for your home, although mine aren't used for that reason.
