Ordering

Most companies do not keep a stock of their dolls on hand; rather, they will make the doll after the order has been placed and paid. Production schedules vary between companies, but the standard wait time ranges from a few days to several months.

A good way to find out how long a company takes to fulfill orders is to read their feedback threads on Den of Angels.

Before buying any doll, new or used, potential buyers should research the reputation and legitimacy of the seller.

New dolls

There are several methods for purchasing new dolls.

Ordering directly from the company

Many companies have websites from which English-speakers can order. Most of these sites operate on a simple shopping cart system. Payment methods vary between companies, ranging from Paypal to credit card to bank wire.

Ordering from a distributor

Some companies also sell through international distributors. These distributors often carry dolls from more than one company; they may have the advantage of lower shipping costs (if they are located in the buyer's country) or other store promotions or policies that that may not be available ordering directly from the maker (such as layaway).

Shopping in person

Some stores, such as Volks and Soom have physical stores where buyers can purchase their dolls in person. Some distributors also have physical stores and keep a stock of dolls on-hand for immediate purchase.

Den of Angels Marketplace

Den of Angels has the largest second-hand market for BJD in the world. The Marketplace is organized by size (Large, Mini, and Tiny). Threads function as classified ads to connect buyers and sellers to perform individual transactions.

All transactions on Den of Angels are considered to be "at your own risk;" aside from banning dishonest sellers, Den of Angels does not moderate individual transactions and is unable to assist in problematic situations.

Purchasing through auction website

eBay, Yahoo!Japan auctions, and other auction sites occasionally have BJDs for auction by private owners. This is considered the riskiest method for buying BJD as there are many bootleggers who sell through these services.
