1. It has come to the attention of forum staff that Dollshe Craft has ceased communications with dealers and customers, has failed to provide promised refunds for the excessive waits, and now has wait times surpassing 5 years in some cases. Forum staff are also concerned as there are claims being put forth that Dollshe plans to close down their doll making company. Due to the instability of the company, the lack of communication, the lack of promised refunds, and the wait times now surpassing 5 years, we strongly urge members to research the current state of this company very carefully and thoroughly before deciding to place an order. For more information please see the Dollshe waiting room. Do not assume this cannot happen to you or that your order will be different.

Souldoll Souloid discussion part 1

Sep 15, 2011

    1. Layaway (or anything, but especially dolls), is a blessing AND a curse!

      1. Ersa Flora
      2. :love
      3. Thank you for all of your info!

    2. For Phiel, SD reccs 12mm. I would assume that's what they have in his head for the promo shots so that may give you a decent idea of what to expect.

Slightly unrelated, but is it just me or is Ersa Flora's site down? I've been getting a temporarily unavailable message for a couple of weeks now and I'd wanted to check her site for eyes for my cyborg's partner.

    3. Yes, Ersa is down. She's currently moving. No return date yet, but I gave her some idea of what I'd like for my Lavi's eyes Try her Instagram, she's active on there.

    4. Ahhh. Thanks for the heads up. I ended up ordering a pair of SD's cat eyes instead so it's no biggie but I do like her eyes as several of my guys wear hers.

Can I get an opinion, guys? I'm really hoping that my boy comes to me with a lot of marbling of his gold skin as that plays a part in his story. Should I tell them in a message that I'd like it if there was marbling? I don't want to confuse them and I'm not requesting they do anything to promote marbling but it would work for his character to have that sort of striping effect on his metal parts.

I know somebody had mentioned getting a souloid before and selling it on because the marbling then was more than the person expected. Does anyone have pics or experience with this that they could share?

    5. I'm honestly kind of excited about the metallic marbling. I don't hate it in any pictures I've seen. It gives a more... Worn in look? Which obviously most people probably don't like, but like you, if fits in with my girls story perfectly. I won't ask for anything specific, but once I see it in person, I know I won't mind too much.

As for confusing them, I've never dealt with Souldoll before this, so I'd love to know how it turns out.

    6. @Iron_Dog 12mm is what they recommended with Diget as well and if that size and look is what one wants, than yes, it would work. Personally I would have prefered 10mm for my boy, but I'm loving his eyes and as such they'll stay as they are :3

I'd contact Souldoll and state your request in simple english.
Like "If possible, I'd love for my boy to have LOTS of marbling in the gold skin. Thank you."
      Just like that :3

And I think that might have been me, mentioning it, thought I wasn't the unhappy party. The Souloid girl really had some heavy marbeling and with what she expected due the promotion pics... yeah. I can understand she sold her.

My Diget has moderate marbeling, but I rather like it and I don't think it's that eye-catching with his blushing now.
Here's a pic of the 'worst' marbeling I had: https://flic.kr/p/owm5dn
Not bad and a nice touch. But if you are expecting it to be one silver color those streaks can be rather... surprising and not working out for your plans at all.

I didn't find the one I meant, but @Shien once posted a nice shoot of her lady, where you can also see the marbeling that could happen: Souldoll Souloid discussion part 1

      Also probably interesting for @britnirose

    7. In-story, Warrick's "striped" chassis was an attempt to create a lighter, tougher amalgam of metals that didn't quite work out as planned. While the process worked, the cost and failure rate was high and the non-uniform colouring wasn't desirable so only a few chassis were made before the process was abandoned. Tohan (Warrick's lover) thinks the striping is very cool and it reminds him of his half-brother's striping pattern (Moswen has gold tiger striping on his skin), which he's always thought was pretty awesome looking.

So yeah, the marbling effect is very desired by me for this guy.

    8. @Snowy you are a fount of information. Thank you for the shots of your boy as well as the links to others dolls. I'll also see what SD says if I send a message to them as you suggested.

    9. @Iron_Dog I just love mechas and Souldoll and have been stalking lots. And somehowseem to remember stuff XD But glad to be of help:=

Do keep us posted :D I'm already looking forward to the new spam of souloid pics :D

    10. I'm doing a layaway for my guy so I don't expect to see him until maybe December. Unless I pay him off sooner, of course....

    11. Same here. I don't expect him until the later part of this year. I'm like a little bit over half on my layaway now.

    12. It is hard to see the marbling on my Diget, it blends in well with the painting.

    13. @Iron_Dog From what I've seen, the metallic streaking is pretty variable, but a lot of people seem to report having it to some degree!

Snowy already linked my post with photos above. My girl does have streaks and it gives the resin a little bit of a 'worn' character, if that's a look you like; I'm of the opinion it looks a lot better under paint, because it gives awesome texture, but I find the horizontal striping on its own to be weird. On the other hand a lot more people have gentler marbling, which might not be obviously stripy enough for what you're after. Casting for metallic and darker resins is fairly unpredictable at the best of times.

Souldoll hasn't been all that accommodating with special requests for me in the past, but if you word it as "I like the marbling/striped effect metallic skin has and am willing to be more accepting of colour/texture imperfections" you might have more luck. Good luck! If all else fails, a bit of blushing might be enough to bring the pattern out.

    14. I sent them a note telling them that I'd be very happy with a lot of marbling in my boy's gold resin as it suits his character. I also said that I understood they can't guarantee the amount of marbling for any doll but that a lot for my boy would be appreciated. Hopefully that's uncomplicated enough for them and that they don't see it as a special request. Who knows? They may read that and parts that turn out with heavy marbling get set aside for my guy.

If he comes with a lot, awesome! If not... *shrugs*. I'll deal with it and adjust my story accordingly. I've already had to change his eye colour twice. The first eyes I wanted ended up selling out before I was able to buy them and the second pair were promptly stolen by another doll that's been wicked hard to find just the right eyes for. I had a sneaking suspicion that would happen because of the colour (teal) so I purchased another pair of eyes before the 2nd pair arrived and I think they'll work out well *crosses fingers*.

I'm very tempted to pay him off sooner than planned as it's starting to look like another planned doll purchase may have fallen through because I wasn't watching an artist blog as diligently as I should have been and may have missed an extremely limited order period *tears*. My wallet is MUCH happier but my dolly addiction is shaking and going into withdrawal.

    15. I got a reply from SD regards my request for substantial marbling. This is what I posted to them:

If it's possible, I'd be very happy if my boy has a lot of marbling in his gold resin parts as I really like the look of the marbling for his character. I understand completely that you can't guarantee the amount of marbling of each doll, but wanted to mention I'd like it if my boy had a lot of it.
      Thank you.

      This is what they responded:

      Hello?
As you know, every situation is different when we make it. However, we will send it to you if it is made as your request.
      Thank you. :)

So... they'll keep in mind what I mentioned but aren't promising anything. I kind of expected that but at least they know I'd like it if there was marbling and that's about the best I can hope for I think.

    16. Plus also, if they make a batch of 10 and the marbling is particularly strong on one, they know they have at least one customer who would see that as a good thing.

    17. Yep. My thoughts exactly. I'm prepared mentally for him to not have a lot as they most likely will be trying to keep the marbling to a minimum but it'll be a nice bonus if he does have a lot.

    18. I can't wait to see the new ones come in so here is Cricket (Diget) I made a leather double pauldron for him. I decorated it so showed the two side of him, geometric (machine) and nature (alive).

    19. I just made my final payment on Warrick last night. Whoot!

I also had to include in the message I sent SD that if my boy was complete now or in the next few days, to please wait to ship him until Nov.2nd as I'll be out of the country on vacation in a few days and can't pick up any packages until then. They replied saying that it takes 12 weeks to make the dolls but will be sending him out Nov.25th.

Yea! I'm not going to hold them to that date as I've been in the hobby long enough to know that when the company intends to send out a doll and the actual time they send out a doll can vary wildly (and sending early hasn't happened all that often to me). I did order a face-up for my free head (the Phiel head I got blank) so that may add another week or so to the actual production time, but whatever. I've got a date-ish of when he'll go out. If that's the case, I'd guesstimate him landing on my doorstep about the first week of December. Sweet!

    20. Hooray that's great news :)
