Dollshe Craft and all dolls created by Dollshe, including any dolls created under his new or future companies, including Club Coco BJD are now banned from Den of Angels. Dollshe and the sculptor may not advertise his products on this forum. Sales may not be discussed, no news threads may be posted regarding new releases. This ban does not impact any dolls by Dollshe ordered by November 8, 2023. Any dolls ordered after November 8, 2023, regardless of the date the sculpt was released, are banned from this forum as are any dolls released under his new or future companies including but not limited to Club Coco BJD. Sealant
Sealing refers to the act of spraying a transparent, matte finish surfacing spray over the face or body of a ball-jointed doll. This sealant can be applied before, during and after the process of creating a faceup to seal the paint or to protect the doll from UV radiation. A base sealant spray is almost always used to protect the doll from staining.
Sealant brands
Common brands that are recommended for their use with dolls include:
- Volks Zoukei-Mura Finishing Powder Spray (UV-Cut or regular)
- Mr. Super Clear Flat (UV-Cut or regular)
Some people use these brands for coating their dolls with little or no trouble:
- Citadel Matte Purity Seal
- Army Painter Matte Spray
- Testor's Dullcote
It is important that the spray used has a matte finish, as a glossy finish will give the doll a very plastic look. UV-Cut sprays give some protection against the yellowing effect of sunlight on resin, but some people prefer non-UV Cut sprays for ease of use, as they tend to give less trouble when drying.
Usage Recommendations
Sealants may not dry properly on humid or cold days, and may leave bubbles or residue on the doll. It is recommended to spray during warm, dry days. It is possible to gently warm (never make them hot) the spray cans or the doll part to be sealed (preferably before adding faceup or blushing) to help on less than acceptable climates.
For health reasons, it is strongly recommended to spray in an open, airy environment and to use a respirator or mask that filters aerosols.
To remove a faceup or blushing sealed with sealant spray, you can use a mild water-based solvent for use with acrylics like Mr. Color Thinner, Winsor & Newton's Brush Cleaner or Tamiya's X20A thinner. 90% Isopropyl Alcohol is also another good option for faceup removal. Acetone or nail varnish remover is heavily discouraged, as it can damage or stain the resin. Always be sure to wash the area afterward to remove any residue.
