Clyde Applerye was like any other country boy, born free to roam wild in the dark backwoods and haunted hollows of the Appalachian mountains. You'd never have known that he wasn't entirely human, or that his knack for finding adventure was much more than simple child's play... Not even if you happened to spot him hitching a ride over the cornfields with a friendly Flat, calling down a Toller with his penny-whistle, playing hide-and-seek with Huckleberry the Behinder, or dancing to the unearthly songs of his shadowy Familiar on the back of a shaggy, roaming Mammot... By the reconning of the old timers, that was all just a normal part of growing up in Witch's Gap.

Born to a long line of country wisewomen and chancy witchfolk herself, Clyde's mother believed that her son's gift for the spirit ways was more like her own craft than it was like the inhuman magic of the mysterious, cat-eyed folk that his father had called kin, but the half-hidden monsters and the hoary old spirits of the mountains knew better. Shonokin blood, they said, runs true.
